  3. Sample 1 Talking About Abbreviations Used Online Li=Li Hong M=Mike Li: What are you doing tonight? M: Chatting online. Li: Again? M: I really enjoy chatting with friends online. It’s such a good way to communicate with each other. Li: Yes, but I am confused when I come across some abbreviations. I don’t know what they all mean. New Practical English 2

  4. Sample 1 Talking About Abbreviations Used Online M: I can tell you some. If someone writes “4ever”, it means “forever”, “BFN” means “bye for now”, “BS” means “big smile”, “FTTB” means “for the time being”, and so on. Li: I see. How interesting! Now I can guess what these abbreviations might mean. M: I know quite a lot of these abbreviations. If you like, I can tell you more. Li: Yes, I will be grateful if you can tell me more.   6. Sample 2 New Slang Joins Internet Talk L=Li Li P=Paul L: Anything interesting in the paper today? P: Let me have a look. Well, there is one article about new slang. L: Really! What does it say? P: New slang has been invented in recent years by students, especially as students get access to Internet and chat online. L: What are the details? P: Chinese students often use “Jituo” (寄托) or “GT”, meaning spiritual matter on campus or after graduation. Here “G” implies “GRE” and “T” implies “TOEFL”. New Practical English 2
