Introduction • The Center for Research & Public Policy (CRPP) is pleased to present the results of a Community Health Survey conducted among residents of Berlin, Newington, Rocky Hill and Wethersfield. • The survey was designed to provide resident input on health care status, needs, prevention and service awareness.

  3. Introduction • The research study included a comprehensive telephone survey. Interviews were conducted among residents of the four communities by phone. CRPP, working together with Health District officials, designed the survey to be used when calling residents. • This report summarizes information collected from telephone surveys conducted December 2 – 8, 2006.

Introduction • The survey instrument employed in the Community Health Survey included the following areas for investigation: • Awareness of and satisfaction with Health District programs and services; • Testing for radon and lead; • Measuring flu and Pneumonia vaccination levels; • Health problems; • Mosquito and tick-borne diseases; • Access to health care; • Dental care; • Measuring tobacco use; • Measuring alcohol consumption;

  5. Introduction • Collecting concerns about health; • Measuring physical activity; • Preventive care; • Nutrition; • Emergency preparedness; • Mental health needs; • Childhood health; and • Demographics

  6. Using a quantitative research design, CRPP completed 400 interviews among residents of Berlin, Newington, Rocky Hill and Wethersfield, Connecticut. All telephone interviews were conducted between December 2 – 8, 2006. Residents were contacted between 5:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. weekdays and 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. on the weekends. Survey input was provided by CCHD officials. Methodology

  7. Survey design at CRPP is a careful, deliberative process to ensure fair, objective and balanced surveys. Staff members, with years of survey design experience, edit out any bias. Further, all scales used by CRPP (either numeric, such as one through ten, or wording such as strongly agree, somewhat agree, somewhat disagree, or strongly agree) are balanced evenly. And, placement of questions is carefully accomplished so that order has minimal impact. Methodology

  8. All population-based surveys conducted by CRPP are proportional to population contributions within States, towns, and known census tract, group blocks and blocks. This distribution ensures truly representative results without significant under or over representation of various geographic or demographic groups within a sampling frame. Methodology

  9. CRPP utilized a “super random digit” sampling procedure, which derives a working telephone sample of both listed and unlisted telephone numbers. This method of sample selection eliminates any bias toward only listed telephone numbers. Additionally, this process allows randomization of numbers, which equalizes the probability of qualified respondents being included in the sampling frame. Methodology

  10. One survey instrument was used to elicit information from all residents. Respondents qualified for the survey if they confirmed they were at least eighteen years of age and were current residents of one of the four communities. Training of telephone researchers and pre-test of the survey instrument occurred on December 1, 2006. Methodology

  11. All facets of the study were completed by CRPP’s senior staff and researchers. These aspects include: survey design, pre-test, computer programming, fielding, coding, editing, data analysis, verification, validation and logic checks, analysis, and report writing. CRPP maintained a 78% completion rate on all calls made during this Community Health Survey. Statistically, a sample of 400 surveys represents a margin for error of +/- 5.0% at a 95% confidence level. Methodology

  12. On The Central Connecticut Health District… In an open end format question, researchers asked respondents to name programs and services offered by The Central Connecticut Health District. Resident respondents were most aware of Flu/Pneumonia shots, VNA nurse visits, cholesterol screenings, the sale of radon kits, blood glucose screenings, cancer screenings and high blood cholesterol classes. Respondents were least aware of testing of ticks, vascular screenings, ACTIVE fitness classes, prescription counseling service, and pedicure foot care clinics. Highlights

  14. Just over ten percent, 11.5%, indicated they have used a service or program sponsored by the District. Of this group, 95.7% suggested they were very (80.4%) or somewhat (15.3%) satisfied with the service(s) provided. Highlights

  16. On Environmental Factors… Nearly one third, 30.5%, indicated they have had their home tested for lead. Among just homeowners, the percent testing was 32.2%. A larger percent, 38.5%, have tested for radon. The percent is larger among only homeowners at 42.0%. Highlights

  18. Of those who have tested (38.5%), 3.9% discovered radon levels above 4 picocuries. And, of this group, 83.3% took corrective action. Highlights

  19. On Vaccinations… More than half of all respondents, 57.3%, said they have had a flu shot within the past year. Another 7.0% said they had the flu shot within the past two years and 3.5% had one within the past five years. Some, 5.0%, said it had been more than five years ago. One quarter of all respondents, 26.3%, said they have never had a flu shot while 1.0% were unsure. Highlights

  21. A majority, 54.0%, received their flu shot at a doctor’s office. This was followed by the workplace (11.3%) and 8.2% who suggested a store (grocery/pharmacy). Among those not receiving a flu shot, the most frequently cited reason was “it was not needed”. Over one quarter, 29.3% said they have had a Pneumonia vaccine shot at some point. Highlights

  22. On Health Problems… The most frequently cited health problems, among eleven measured, included high cholesterol (27.3%), poor eye vision (20.8%), arthritis (20.5%), and hypertension (14.3%). Among those over 65 years of age, these percentages rise to 39.2%, 25.6%, 37.6% and 20.0% respectively. Highlights

  24. On Mosquito and Tick-Borne Diseases… Over half of all respondents, 50.8%, said they took no preventive measures to protect themselves against Lyme Disease over the last twelve months. However, 22.0% said they wore long pants and 20.5% indicated they used insect repellent on skin and clothes. Others, 11.3%, looked for ticks on themselves and 2.3% created a tick free backyard using recommended landscaping techniques. Highlights

  25. A larger majority, 59.8%, indicated they took no measures to protect themselves from the West Nile Virus. Some, 12.8% did remove standing water while 15.5% used insect repellent. Others avoided areas where there are mosquitoes (10.0%), used BTI or other larvicide around the home (1.3%), avoided outdoor activities after dusk (9.8%), wore long sleeves and pants (9.3%), fixed screen holes (0.8%), sprayed insecticide (8.3%) and checked rain gutters (1.8%).   26. On Access to Health Care… A large majority, 87.8%, indicated they have had a routine checkup within the past year. Highlights

  28. And, 96.8% said they had no difficulties getting to a doctor or other health professional for exams or screenings. While most respondents did have some type of health care insurance, 5.5% said they either did not have any (1.0%) or were unsure (4.5%). Highlights

  30. On Dental Care… A large majority, 85.8% reported they have had routine dental care within the past twelve months. Another 14.2% said they had not had care within the past year. Highlights

  32. Most, 95.0%, said they did not encounter difficulties in getting dental care. Among those who did face difficulties, affordability, finding a dentist accepting their insurance, and lack of or inadequate insurance were named most frequently. On Tobacco Use… While 86.0% said they do not currently smoke cigarettes, pipes, cigars or use chewing tobacco, 13.8% said they did. Highlights

  34. In Connecticut, 18.1% of adults are current smokers based on 2005 Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids data. Of this group of smokers, 81.8% said they have been told by a health care professional that they should quit. Highlights

  36. On Alcohol Use… Just over one half of all respondents, 50.3%, mentioned they do not drink alcohol. Others suggested they drink somewhere between less than one drink per week to 7 or more weekly. Highlights

  38. Nearly two thirds, 64.3%, said they never drink more than four drinks in one sitting. And, 82.9% said they never drive after drinking. Highlights

  39. On Health Concerns… While 38.5% said they have no current concerns for their personal health, others (in declining order) cited cancer, obesity, aging, air pollution, heart attack, cost of health insurance, arthritis, smoking and diabetes. Highlights

  41. Some respondents, 2.0%, said they currently need services to assist them with living at home. More than three quarters, 79.3%, said they were very or somewhat aware of the local Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) headquartered in Berlin. Highlights

  43. On Physical Activity… A large majority, 80.8%, indicated they do moderate exercise in a usual week that causes small increases in breathing and heart rate. And, 20.0% said they do vigorous exercise in a typical week that causes large increases in breathing and heart rate. Highlights

  45. On Preventive Care… A large majority of respondents, 98.5%, indicated they have had their blood pressure measured within the past two years. And, 87.0% said they have had their cholesterol screened after fasting. Nearly two thirds of those 50 years of age or over, 63.3%, said they have had a colonoscopy. Highlights

  46. Among those 45 years of age or older, 71.9% said they have had a diabetes screening by blood sugar. Three quarters of men 40 years of age or older, 73.3%, mentioned they have had a prostate cancer screening. Highlights

  47. Among females 40 years of age or older, 89.4% indicated they have had a mammogram within the past two years. And, among all females, 82.6%, noted they have had a gynecological exam over the past twelve months. Highlights

  48. On Nutrition… The average servings for vegetables, fruit and milk were recorded as 1.99, 1.74 and 1.59 respectively. Current USDA recommended daily servings for adults: 4-5 Servings vegetables 2 Servings fruits 2-3 Servings dairy (1 serving = 1 cup) Highlights

  50. When shopping, 1.8% said they “always” include organic foods as the majority of their purchase. Another 4.3% indicated that organic foods are “most of the time” the majority of their purchase. One quarter (23.0%) said “sometimes” and 24.5% said “seldom”. Others, 44.3%, said organic foods are never a majority of their purchase. Highlights
