  1. ES1 EXAMPLE ANSWERS Is Source D useful evidence of the reasons for the clearances? Answer 1 Source D is very useful evidence as it’s a primary source. The source is useful as it was written by an eyewitness who was a local landlord. However, the source tells us he wants to get rid of the local people and replace them with sheep. However the source only tells us one side of the story, other landlords could have different opinion of the clearances.

  2. Answer 2 Source D is partly useful for investigating the effects of the Highland Clearances. The source is useful as it was written at the time of the highland clearances, making it a primary source. The source is also useful because it was written by a laird at the time of the clearances. As it is a laird who wrote it so the source will be biased. It tells us why people had to move because he swapped them for sheep.

  4. Answer 4 Source D is partly useful for investigating the effects of the Highland Clearances. The source is useful as it is a primary source and was written at the time of the Highland Clearances. Source D is also useful as it was written by a local laird and he was an eyewitness to the clearances. However as a landlord this man is more inclined to be biased. Only one person’s experience, which means only one person’s opinion. Also h is trying to justify his actions by giving what he thinks as valid reasons as to why he is getting rid of people.

  5. Answer 5 At the time of the highland Clearances people have left because there is not enough room, as a result of this we do not think this is very accurate because it is one person’s view and it could be biased. Also it is only one person’s reason and other landlord’s might have had other reasons. He is trying to justify his actions and show the clearances are necessary.
