  1. Joint IEEE-SA and ITU Workshop on Ethernet Multi Domain Segmented network Protection (MDSP) Huub van Helvoort, Senior Researcher Huawei Technologies

  2. Introduction: G.MDSP • Describes end-to-end protection across multiple cascaded protected domains to support service survivability. • This is achieved via concatenation of multiple protection instances/segments in each protected domain.

  3. Introduction: G.MDSP(cont’d) • Both single node and dual node interconnection between protected domains are described. • Each protected domain may be in a different administrative domain and support protection using either the same or different layer networks.

  4. Possible Scenarios Protected Domain Protected Domain Protected Domain Protected Domain Protected Domain Protected Domain Network-to-UNI UNI Network-to-ENI ENI Network-to-Network

  5. Single node Interconnect Two protected domains interconnected by single node(s). Single point of failure!

  6. Dual node Interconnect Two protected domains interconnected by dual node(s)

  7. Multi Domain example ETH Domain OTN Domain ETH Domain ETH (G.8031/G.8032) ETH (G.8031/G.8032) OTN (G.873.1/G.873.2) Segment protection 1 Segment protection 2 Segment protection 3 End-to-end protection Each domain has its own, technology based, protection mechanism.

  8. Study points • End-to-end service survivability along the concatenated protected domain for each case: • Node failure analysis (restrict to one domain, adjacent domains) • Identify domain interactions • Possible hold-off timers (end-to-end, per domain, technology dependent)

  9. Conclusion The main objective for development of this recommendation is to define the interworking of protection mechanisms • This is work in progress inQ9/SG15
