  1. Goesintas I am learning to solve “How many sets of ...” and “sharing” division problems using multiplication. 12 ÷ ? = 3 3 X ? = 12

  2. Angela has 18 counters to share between 3 groups. 18 ÷ 3 = ? or 3 X ? = 18 Below are 3 groups. Start by sharing 3 counters between the 3 groups. 3 ÷ 3 = 1 Now share 3 more between each group (this means you will have shared 6 counters in total). 6 ÷ 3 = 2 Now share 3 more between each group (this means you will have shared 9 counters in total). 9 ÷ 3 = 3 We have now shared out 9 of the 18 counters we need to. That’s half of the counters. That means we have to share the same amount again so everyone will get 3 more counters. That’s 6 counters in total. 18 ÷ 3 = 6

  3. Zoe has 42 sweets to share between 6 groups. 42 ÷ 6 = ? or 6 X ? = 42 Below are 6 groups. I know 6 X 5 = 30 so I’m going to start by sharing out 30 sweets. 30 ÷ 6 = 5 I need to share out 42 sweets but I have only shared out 30. That means I have 12 more sweets to share out. 6 X 2 = 12 or 12 ÷ 6 = 2 We have now shared out all 42 sweets. 5 sweets (the first amount we shared + 2 sweets the second amount we shared = 7 sweets). 42 ÷ 6 = 7 5 5 5 5 5 5 2 2 2 2 2 2

  4. Adam has 72 sweets to share between 8 groups. 72 ÷ 8 = ? or 8 X ? = 72 Below are 8 groups. I know 8 X 5 = 40 so I’m going to start by sharing out 40 sweets. 40 ÷ 8 = 5 I need to share out 72 sweets but I have only shared out 40. That means I have 32 more sweets to share out. 8 X 4 = 32 or 32 ÷ 8 = 4 We have now shared out all 72 sweets. 5 sweets (the first amount we shared + 4 sweets the second amount we shared = 9 sweets). 72 ÷ 8 = 9 5 5 5 5 5 5 5 5 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4
