  2. Key Terms • Fact • something provable • Opinion • something un-provable (look for words like best, always, etc) • Persuasion • Persuasion uses language to motivate a person to adopt an opinion about a particular subject. It often uses emotional language and dramatic appeals to prove a point.

  3. Questions to ask about media • Who is the intended audience? • Ask yourself – • Is this for someone who is old or young? • Male or female? • The general public or a specific group?

  4. Questions to ask about media • Does it use Formal or Informal language? • Formal language: It is clearer and more precise in its structure and vocabulary. It adheres to standard English rules. It avoids contractions and abbreviations. • Informal language: It comes closer to capturing the way people really speak. It is looser, less precise, may contain slang, and tends to use contractions and abbreviations.

  5. Questions to ask about media • What point of view is it in – 1st, 2nd, 3rd? • 1st – about the writer (I, Me, We) • 2nd – about the reader (you) • 3rd – about another person, thing, or group (he, she, they, it)

TV Ad 1 Watch this commercial a couple times and complete the section on your notes page! • Who is the intended audience? • Does it use Formal or Informal language? • What point of view is it in – 1st, 2nd, 3rd? • What text structure is used (chronological, order of importance, compare/contrast, problem/solution, cause/effect, or spatial)? • Is figurative language used (simile, metaphor, imagery, irony, symbolism, allusion, hyperbole, personification)? • What are the “ah-ha” words?
