2. Job Description • Community workers help people in need get food, shelter, health care, companionship, and hope. • Community workers have roles similar to social and religious workers. However, they work for different organizations and the training they receive may be slightly different. Community workers may work as social service assistants, case management aides, welfare officers, outreach workers, residential counsellors, childcare workers, or gerontology aides. Their clients include people facing problems such as homelessness, substance abuse, family violence, poverty, physical disability, or mental illness. • Community workers also keep records and monitor the progress of their clients. They provide emotional support and may help people take care of everyday problems relating to personal hygiene, money, or medical concerns. For example, a community worker who is helping a homeless client with an illness such as schizophrenia might encourage him or her to stay in the shelter and remain on medication, and may arrange for the client to see a psychiatrist.

3. Solitary • Workers with extensive experience and training may advance to management positions. At this level, they usually have less contact with clients and their everyday needs. Instead, they concentrate on fundraising, raising public awareness, and creating and evaluating social assistance programs. This means that they have the opportunity to study the strengths and weaknesses of current programs and to try to change them for the better.

4. Skills Required • Community workers are employed in many different places. These include halfway houses, correctional facilities, street-based outreach services, psychiatric hospitals, outpatient clinics, group homes, shelters, and social service and government agencies. They may do some of their work at clients’ homes. • They work with other professionals in the health care and human services fields, such as nurses, rehabilitation counsellors, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and faith-based agency workers. • They need to have a lot of time to work on day and night because some of those workers have to work all time. • Working with people in difficulty can be very challenging and exhausting. Because many community agencies are small, wages are relatively low and staff often do a lot of extra work to make sure that clients get what they need. Due to these factors, there is a risk of burnout in this field. • However, the work can be extremely rewarding. Community workers are able to watch their clients become more effective in managing their own lives.

5. Education and Training • A high school diploma is the minimum amount of education needed in this job. However, most employers prefer applicants who have taken related college courses. A diploma or bachelor’s degree in human services, social work, child and youth care, social services, or a related field is even better. • A bachelor’s degree is usually necessary for advancement to management positions, and may also be necessary for some types of counseling. In addition, a master’s degree can be very useful for advancement, and is sometimes required for senior positions. The more education you acquire, the greater your chances of obtaining a higher paying and more advanced position. • In additional to formal education, volunteer experience with non-profit organizations involved in social aid is extremely helpful and may be necessary. • Above all --- Once hired, community workers generally receive on-the-job training. The type and length of training varies according to the employer.

7. There Are Many Job Opportunities As A Social Worker • There are many Types of social worker jobs. People who want to help others can work in a wide variety of settings, which is encouraging because it allows for plenty of job diversity and job growth. I would like to be community worker some day because is interesting how people can get our help and is very good look at the people happy because we helped them with some problems, now I’m a community person and I like helping others. I Specially would like to be a community worker to care for babies o children because I love them, I enjoy interacting with them and I like can help them with everything I’m very patience teaching them every time y could stay with them all day and that doesn’t bother me. This job can help children to get responsibility in their life because a community worker who care for babies o children teach them some values and teaching that they can apply in their future. A community worker can take care of them all time and in the same time the are interacting with people and learning new words with them; Is necessary for children in Nova Scotia and all kind of countries in the world because a community worker helps raise awareness ‘’ With a community worker children can get a positive contributions in their development, a community worker help children learn about responsibility and develop particular skills that will benefit them and the rest of society’’.
