Artemisia’s father was a well known artist, and he recognized that his eldest daughter also had the gift. Her mother passed away when she was only 12, so her father began tutoring her in the arts. She had a difficult time in the male dominated field of art, but continued to create works based on Biblical stories, and some of which reflected her own life.

SOME CHARACTERISTICS OF CUBISM CHALLENGED CONVENTIONAL FORMS OF REPRESENTATION…IT WAS A NEW WAY OF SEEING WHICH REFLECTED THE “MODERN AGE” YOUR SIGHT OF AN OBJECT IS THE SUM OF MANY DIFFERENT VIEWS AND MEMORY OF AN OBJECT IS NOT CONSTRUCTED FROM JUST ONE ANGLE, BUT FROM MANY ANGLES DEPICTS PEOPLE, PLACES OR OBJECTS – BUT NOT FROM A FIXED VIEWPOINT MANY PARTS OF OBJECTS ARE SHOWN AT ONE TIME

  42. More characteristics of CUBISM • Tried to show all sides of 3 dimensional objects • Broke objects into shapes and then reassembled the shapes into a composition • Can’t be sure of what shape is in front of another • Spatial ambiguity
