  1. Weather Tools ISN

  2. Link List three tools you might use when making observations about weather

  3. Essential Question ? • How do you use tools to gather data about the weather?

  4. Barometer • Measures the air pressure in inches of mercury (in) or millibars(mb) • There are two pointers: • The one inside the glass is the current reading • The one on top you move is the set pointer

  5. Using the Barometer • Find the current reading. • Read the set pointer. • Write your findings down. • Compare the current reading to the set pointer • If the current reading is higher, then the air pressure is rising • If the current reading is lower, then the air pressure is falling • This can let you know if a storm is coming.

  6. Wind Vane • Measures the direction from which the wind is coming from.

  7. Using the Wind Vane • Using a compass, find north and set the vane so that the compass rose (not the movable arrow) points north. • Wait for the wind to blow. The arrow will point in the direction THE WIND IS COMING FROM! • Winds are named by the direction they come from!

  8. Anemometer • Measures the wind speed in miles per hour

  9. Using the Anemometer • Have one person use a stop watch or clock for a minute. • Have another person count the number of rotations in a minute. • This won’t be in miles per hour, but in rotations per minute

  10. Rain Gauge • Measures the amount of precipitation in inches or centimeters.

  11. Using the Rain Gauge • Rain gauges work just like a graduated cylinder, so measure to the meniscus.
