  2. Background Darfur is a long-neglected province in western Sudan. Two major groups: Farmers or Peasants Pastoralists Farmers and pastoralists live in symbiotic relationship of mutual dependence.

  3. Background Continued… Pastoralists see themselves as Arabs and look down upon the sedentary farmers as lesser people. Discrimination of status is seen developed in these two groups. All pastoralists have guns, despite the amount of poverty in Darfur.

  4. Due to economic needs, farmers and pastoralists are put under pressure by wealthy local Jellaba merchants to produce more quantizes of products. http://www.google.com/search?q=darfur&client=safari&rls=en&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=lIoOU_byJYLl0wHT_oCwBg&sqi=2&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAQ&biw=1280&bih=609#q=Darfur+merchants&rls=en&tbm=isch&facrc=_&imgdii=_&imgrc=A7-Rau19sLfOHM%253A%3BVA4kGXJ3S0RIJM%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fstatic.guim.co.uk%252Fsys-images%252FGuardian%252FPix%252Fpictures%252F2012%252F10%252F18%252F1350580782945%252F30ec0401-b2e3-407d-98e8-730b2e99f384-620.jpeg%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.theguardian.com%252Fnews%252F2012%252Foct%252F18%252Fpicture-desk-live-the-best-news-pictures-of-the-day%3B620%3B372

  5. Government Is No Help • Briagdier Omar Hassan Ahman al-Bashir is elected as Governor of Darfur. • Instead of helping its’ people, the Government encourages Janjaweed, or horsemen to “live out their fantasies” against the peasants. http://www.google.com/search?q=darfur&client=safari&rls=en&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=lIoOU_byJYLl0wHT_oCwBg&sqi=2&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAQ&biw=1280&bih=609#q=darfur+janjaweed&rls=en&tbm=isch&facrc=_&imgdii=_&imgrc=7x-wgJtbxZ4AWM%253A%3BSTxzFtgEjQ9uIM%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.jewishworldwatch.org%252Fwp-content%252Fuploads%252F2010%252F07%252F620janjaweed.jpg%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fstudents.wells-ict.com%252Fhetvi%252FGenocides%252FDarfur_Genocide.html%3B620%3B320

  6. Revolt Organizations such as the Sudan Liberation Army and the Justice and Equality Movement took up arms in an attempt to change the way farmers were being treated. The government shut them down by executing their power on them. This problem is yet to be resolved as the Government of Sudan is doing so little.
