  2. Warm Up Tom and Jarod have been friends since the sixth grade. They were always in the same clubs and on the same sports teams. Now that they are sophomores, Tom is meeting new friends, and his interests have changed. He wants to try new things, but wants to remain friends with Jarod, too. • Write about a time in your life when a friendship changed. What caused the change in the friendship? How did you handle the change?

  3. Peer Relationships Peers • Peers are people of similar age who share similar interests. • Friendships have several common attributes: (quality of characteristics) • Similar values, interests, beliefs, and attitudes • Open and honest communication • Sharing of joys, disappointments, dreams, and concerns • Mutual respect, caring, and support • Concerns about each other’s safety & well being. Friends

Types of Friendships • Casual – someone you share interests with, but not deep emotional bond. • Close – strong emotional ties to each other. • Platonic – friendship with a member of the opposite sex, in which there is affection, but the two people are not a couple. • Online – friendship over the internet

  5. Recognizing Problems in Friendships • Clique – a small circle of friends, usually with similar backgrounds or tastes, who exclude people viewed as outsiders. • Envy or Jealousy – • Such feelings may arise if one friend compares him/herself to another friend.

  6. When Friendships Change Reasons to end a friendship: • If a friend pressures you to do something that is unsafe or against your values. • If a friends says hurtful and insulting things to you. • If a friend constantly tries to get you to change your beliefs or actions.

  7. Group Activity Using the “I” messages form of communication work in pairs to respond to these comments or situations in a healthy way. For each situation, use the following format: I feel _____________ when you ____________ because ____________ and I’d like/I want ____________. Would you consider __________? • A friend has recently been hanging out with people who smoke. • Maria excludes Joanna from the lunch group b/c she is not a part of their clique. • An employee is late to work several times. • Your boy/girlfriend wants you to stay out past your curfew. • Your sister/brother constantly goes in your closet and borrows your clothes. • Your best friend wants you to help him/her cheat on the midterm.

  8. Independent Practice • Write a fictional letter to a friend that you believe is envious or jealous of you. In your letter, include: • Behaviors that indicate your friend is jealous/envious • How you feel • Advice on how to overcome that jealous/envious feeling
