Why do we need new assessments? • The new SBAC assessments will be ready by the 2014-2015 school year. • Smarter Balanced assessments will go beyond multiple-choice questions and include short constructed response, extended constructed response, and performance tasks that will allow students to complete in-depth work that demonstrates analytical skills and real-world problem solving.

  3. What are the Common Core Standards? • State-led effort to establish a shared set of clear educational standards • Common Standards will help ensure students are receiving a high-quality education consistently from school to school and state to state. • Designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers.

  4. Just as important as content…“The Four C’s” • Critical thinking and problem solving—including the ability to make decisions, solve problems, and take action as appropriate; • Communication skills—the ability to synthesize and transmit your ideas both in written and oral formats; • Collaboration and team building—the ability to work effectively with others, including those from diverse groups and with opposing points of view; • Creativity and innovation—the ability to see what’s NOT there and make something happen.

Adult Actions to develop CCSS “habits of mind” • Intentionally sequence instructional strategies • Think, Pair-Share (or Think, Write, Pair-Share) • Show/model “thinking” in classrooms • Practice questioning and wait time • Group students and use engaging problems • Use questions and prompts with student groups • Allow struggle time • Encourage/model logical reasoning • Model connecting learning to bigger picture

  11. Summative AssessmentsAPPROXIMATE Testing Times The test duration estimates described above are applicable to most students. However, Smarter Balanced assessments are not timed tests. Some students may need more time while others may made need less time to complete the assessment.

  12. How are we preparing our students? Staff- continued implementation of CCSS, participate in practice test in January, review SBAC examples, continued performance task development Students- continued interaction with CCSS, rich learning opportunities, keyboarding instruction, exposure to practice test examples, participation in performance task in math and ela(grades 3-6), collaborative experiences Curriculum- continued alignment of math/ela, identifying explicit technology readiness skills, continued staff straining, inclusion of more non-fiction materials, explicit modeling for ‘habits of mind’ Assessment- development of performance tasks, new assessments, standards-based rubrics, revision of report cards to be aligned to standards, exploration of NWEA for additional data
