  2. What is the purpose of the TB symptom screening tool? • Random screening to determine if people display TB symptoms • Refer those who do display symptoms to the clinic to get tested Why is this important? • High TB prevalence communities • Encourage people to get tested What and Why?

Introducing yourself • Introduce yourself • Ask for permission • Ask if the individual is there to go to the TB clinic • If they are, thank them for their time and proceed to the next person • Identify a person visiting the clinic for reasons other than to go to the TB clinic • Proceed with screening How to use the tool

  5. Contact details • Name • Surname • Gender (M/F) • Address • Contact number • Date NB: Due to the position of the M/F question it is easily overlooked. Do not forget to ask this! How to use the tool

  6. Reason for screening 1. Contact with TB patient? Yes? 2. Do they know what type of TB the person had? If ‘no’ select the ‘TB contact option’ If ‘yes’, type of TB was drug sensitive TB select the ‘TB contact option’ If ‘yes’ type of TB was MDR or XDR TB select the ‘MDR/XDR TB contact option’ How to use the tool

  7. Symptom check Ask the person the following questions: • Do you have a cough for more than 2 weeks? • Do you have loss of weight? • Do you sweat a lot at night? • Do you have a fever? If they answer ‘yes’ to one or more symptoms, evaluate for TB NB: in Q1 remember to say 2 weeks or more How to use the tool

  8. Referral information • Name of facility the patient is referred to • Name of SLF team member or health care worker doing screening How to use the tool

  9. Recap • Go through the reasons for screening and tick where appropriate • Go through the various symptoms and tick where appropriate • Refer person to get tested were applicable How to use the tool

This is a symptomatic screening tool and NOT a TB test • Only screen people who are at the clinic for reasons other than to visit the TB clinic • This tool is designed for adults • This tool can be used by laypersons after undergoing basic training • Make use of colour stickers to identify persons already screened • Make sure that the persons contact details are legible Remember
