  2. Learning Objectives By the end of this Section you should be able to use certain aspects of JMP: • Import data from Excel into JMP • Arrange data files so that they can be analyzed • Understand the platforms • Use the Formula editor to create new, more useful variables

JMP-Menu or What you can do in JMP • The main menu is the entry to various tools with which one can operate on data. • Edit contains ways to copy sections of output for use in other programs. • Tables allow one to manipulating tables • Rows is used to manage analysis observation by observation • Column is used to add variables or define the role of existing ones • DOE, Analyze, Graph are the analysis tools in JMP • Tool contains curser, copy tool, help, annotation etc. • Help is very extensive base to learn more about tools

  5. Preferences Text Import/Export Proper Preferences for Text Import/Export can simplify your work in JMP. Make sure Import settings have proper fields marked. More than one field can be marked. Check whether table contains Column headers. Always click on Apply before OK.

  6. Platform Preferences Distribution Platform Platforms have preferences regarding the default output, etc. Check preferences Use to suit your output needs.

  8. Import from Excel JMP supports many import formats. To import from Excel, data must be in some useable form. Save data sheet as a single spreadsheet!! (Avoid Worksheets with multiple Sheets). Select the All Files option to show the available files. Headings all in 1 row No empty rows or columns Empty cells are OK. If a cell contains non-numeric characters, JMP turns entire column into a Character/Nominal. Change back to Numeric/Continuous in Column Info window. Select appropriate import file type.

Tables Creates new Data files • Summary calculates Mean, Std Dev, Min, Max, Range, and others. • Sort arranges existing data files in order of one or more variables in ascending or descending order. • Stack places two columns on top of each other and uses the column headings as ID separate column of new file. • Split is the reverse of Stack: create separate columns using an ID variable as new headings • Transpose changes rows into columns and column into rows. When transposing several columns, be sure they are all the same data type (continuous, nominal). • Concatenate is used to combine the rows of two different data tables with the same column names • Join is used to combine the columns of two different data tables with the same rows. • Update is used to get the most recent values from a linked table.

  13. Summary Summary creates a new data table containing the specified statistics. These can be used for further analysis.

  14. Subset creates a new data table in three ways: (1) User selects rows and columns to be contained in new data set. (2) All Rows of a selected number of columns. (3) Random sample of specified size [4] Subset can be linked or independent from original table. Rows 1 -6 were selected. Subset

Rows is for Observations • Exclude/Unexclude is a toggle to exclude selected (highlighted) observations from analysis • Hide/Unhide is a toggle that hides selected (highlighted) observations from graphs • Lable/Unlabel is a toggle that will place a label on selected (highlighted) observations • Default label is row number • Override default by using Label on column menu • Colors allows changing the color of selected observations as they appear in a graph • select color from menu • Marker allows changing the graph symbol of observations as they appear in graph • Select new marker from menu

Row Selection • Go to Row allows quick access to specific row number • Invert Row Selection selects Unselected rows and unselects Selected rows • Select Where is explained on next slide. • Select Matching Cell: By clicking on a column and a row, and the Select Matching Cells, select all other rows with the same value in that column.

  21. Row Selection – Select Where… • Select Where… allows to specify certain conditions (equality, greater than) • More than one criterion can be specified • Selection can be made from current selection of rows. Used to create sub-files for easy navigation and analysis.

  23. Cols (Columns) is for Variables • New Column is to add single column. Same as double clicking to the right of last column. • Add Multiple Columns: to add at least one column anywhere in the data sheet. • Column Info contains format and other information. • Formula is column property. Data are generated by formula. • Label/Unlabel to designate a column as label for ID in plots. (Dates or names are common labels). Restricted to one column. • Hide/Unhide columns does not remove column from data sheet. Makes scrolling easier.

  24. Column Info • Column Info is used to change • Data types (Numeric, Character, Row State) • Modeling Types (Continuous, Ordinal, Nominal) • Format (Best, Fixed Dec, Time) • Change Column Name • Click Apply button to make changes Important

Column Properties • Formula to create values • Notes to annotate column (date collected, meaning, common name) • Range Check to make sure values are realistic • List Check to give nominal values an order other than alphabetical • Axis to specify the axis range, etc. for this column. This is used when many histograms are compared. • Spec Limits can be stored for repeated capability analysis • Control Limits can be stored once baseline has been calculated. Adding new data will keep old control limits • Sigma is used to store process variation • Units is used to recall the units ($, inches, etc.)

  26. Revised Order Original Order Default is alphabetical order. = Use Move Up or Move Down button to reorder selected values (here Move Down “high”) List Check List Check can not be performed on Formula Columns. Remove Formula first!

Calculator Function menus List of Variables Actual formula that creates column values Formula Editor Window • Formula can be used to create new columns with values • generated from within formula (random simulation) • calculated from other columns (from Overall Score in panel on left) • Functions have long menus • Calculator used for + or – , etc. • Click on Apply to execute changes

  29. Formula Editor – Creating a Nominal Variable Must choose from Comparison menu. Nominal values need to be in “quotes”. Click on Apply to get the values! If a condition is satisfied, then the value will be assigned to new variable. This process creates a variable with the value “High”, if the Overall Score is above 90, and “Low” if it is below 90. Below 90 is the “else” condition.

  30. Highlight field before else. Double-Click on carrot. Enter new condition. Use squiggle to delete highlighted fields. Formula Editor Calculator – Adding Conditions This Step adds an additional “medium” condition to the original “high” & “low”!

  31. Average of Q1A, Q1B, and Q1C columns: Create new column and call it “Q1 average”. Right click on name to bring up Formula window. The formula field is empty. On column list, click on first variable name in average (Q1A). Click on + to add another field. Click on next variable (Q1B) and repeat. When all variables to be averaged are entered, most likely the last field is highlighted. Before dividing, make sure the highlight surrounds the entire expression by clicking on outside dotted square anywhere. – It’s a delicate operation. Hit the divide sign on calculator and enter the averaging constant (3) into field. Click Apply. Check the column. Formula Editor - Simple Calculations

  33. DOE • Choose Screening Design to find which factors are important. • Choose Full Factorial Design to estimate factor effects and all interaction effects. • Choose Response Surface to optimize system. • Sample Size and Power useful to determine required sample sizes for different situations.

  36. Graph Menu • Chart gives vertical and horizontal bar charts as well as a pie chart for nominal variables • Overlay plots one or more continuous variables against order or some X-variable. Separate left and right axis labels available • Control Chart for plotting data and data summaries over time with control limits. • Pareto Chart for plotting the occurrences of outcomes of a nominal variable from most to least frequent. Used to select major causes.

  42. JMP Tools • Arrow is for normal navigation • Help is used to fins out more about a topic. Select Help tool and click on output. It will produce an explanation • Selection is used to highlight areas for copying to other documents (Windows or Power Point) • Grabber is used to change appearance of graphs such as histograms. • Crosshair is used to read values from graphs. • Annotate, Line, Polygon, and Simple Shape are used to enrich output before it is pasted to other applications.

  43. Grabber Tool • The grabber tool can be used to change the appearance of a histogram and other plots and charts. • Change the range of axis values, but does not replace the double-click on axis command • Change the histogram appearance • Also useful in spinning plot, Cusum charts

How to get output into Word or Power Point • Three general approaches • Using Selection Tool and Copy To copy one piece of output directly into the desired application • Journal Results (to Word) To obtain a lot of output for further editing and commenting • Save Selection As To save selections of output as separate files (BNG, JPG, WMF)

Paste Special EMF Overall Score In JMP In PowerPoint Using Selection Tool and Copy • Click on Selection Tool • Highlight desired output with Selection Tool by Left-Clicking and dragging over the output that needs to be copied • Copy (Copy as Text for numeric only output is possible) • Change application to Word or PPT • Paste or Paste Special

Create a Journal • Select output with Selection Tool • Journal entire output if none is selected • On Edit Menu select Journal (Ctrl+J) to create new Journal window with selected output • Add additional output if desired by repeating steps • Save Journal AS Rtf file (Rtf is Rich Text Format) • Open Journal.rtf with Word (any name is appropriate for Journal)
