  3. Workshop plan • Break up into groups • We’ll do 3 exercises • Spend 15 mins on each exercise: • Explanation of scenario - All • Work on exercise - Groups • Discussion – Groups • Questions

  4. Things to keep in mind • Altmetrics will never present the fullpicture or provide the entire answer – they are additional information to supplement your decision-making process • Which altmetrics you use/are valuable varies depending on the objective of each research project • Numbers provide a hint about where to look, the qualitative information is where the value lies • The scenarios have been simplified for the purpose of this activity – real life is much more complex

  5. Exercise 1: Grant application • You are a researcher from your institution Role • You are trying to secure grant funding • As part of the application you have to demonstrate“broader impact”and “wide dissemination” outside of academia Scenario • Using Altmetric Explorer for Institutions, select a researcher from your institution in the Explore my institution tab and Authors • What information would you include in your grant application? • Hint: Remember it’s not about numbers but qualitative stories demonstrate “broader impact” Instructions 10-15 mins working in your groups

  6. Exercise 2: Finding popular articles in a specific discipline • You are Subject Specialist Librarian Role • A researcher from your institution comes to you wanting help to find trending articles in his field • He has RSS feeds, journal alerts, etc. set up but he’s concerned he’s missing research getting attention across areas they can’t track Scenario • What additional information would you need from the researcher to provide useful information? • How would you instruct them to use Altmetric Explorer for Institutions? Instructions 10-15 mins working in your groups

  7. Exercise 3 • You are Director of Communications Role • You’ve directed your team to highlight 1-2 articles a month featuring research of interest to the general public • The team will do a press release and push via social media and the campus website Scenario • Using Altmetric Explorer for Institutions, find 5 research outputs you would recommend highlighting for this month’s press release and why • What are the different search criteria you would use to identify the outputs? Instructions 10-15 mins working in your groups

  8. Group discussion • What did you find? • What types of discussions around the research outputs did you identify by reading the mentions? • How would you encourage researchers to disseminate their work online? • What are the popular papers? What type of attention did they receive? • What cautions/precautions would you recommend to others in using the data?
