  4. Who are artesanas campesinas? Artesanas Campesinas (Artcamp) is a local enterprise with a social mission. Artcamp is a rural women artisans cooperative from the Municipality of Taxco, Guerrero, Mexico (southwest of Mexico City), specializing in traditional handcrafted jewelry production. In 2000 Artcamp solicited the donation of an eye surgery center from a manufacturer of medical equipment in Columbus Ohio in the United States. And Artcamp solicited DHL International to deliver the 1000 pound shipment to Taxco at no charge for the Hospital Our Hospital project turned out to be a great success! 5. What is artcamp’s mission & vision? Artcamp’s mission is to connect the rich handcrafts tradition of our community with the present day markets of the world. In doing so, we aim to provide a sustainable flow of income into a region that sees many of the men leaving town to find work. Artcamp’s visionis to be a model for other low cost native craft enterprises both in Mexico and abroad. Our goal is to share our knowledge in inventory and distribution management, technical infrastructure, and marketing with other artisans so that too can become more creative, efficient, and productive, and successful.

  6. GREETINGS FROM THE DOCTORS AND NURSES OF TAXCO DEL ALARCON GUERRERO MEXICO We are the nurses and doctors in the public hospital that serves a big area of rural northern Guerrero one of the poorest states in México. We are looking for some worthy persons who will willingly join with us and help for a greater good. Our vision is of a modern hospital with up to date equipment and technical services. Can you help? We will always gratefully acknowledge help we receive from our friends.

  7. TAXCO DEL ALARCON GUERRERO MÉXICO An opportunity presented itself to us when the Burton Company of Columbus Ohio offered to donate opthamological equipment to our Hospital. We made some petitions to DHL International which kindly offered to transport the opthamological medical equipment without any cost to us. HOW WE GOT THE IDEA The Secretary of Health of the State of Guerrero gave an award to Artcamp for successfully carrying out this project. The notable success of the optamological donation is what inspired us to put together the program detailed in this slide show.

  8. Thanks to RH Burton Company of Columbus Ohio USA Delivery of Ophthalmic Medical Equipment to Taxco’s Adolfo Prieto Public Hospital

  9. Eye diseases and treatments are diagnosed and treated in the Adolfo Prieto Hospital OPTHALMIC EQUIPMENT & EYE SURGERY CENTER • The unblinded one gratefully testifies to the skill of Doctor Olivares

  10. is a State of Guerrero Public Hospital with a budget for so many doctors and nurses, but NO budget for supplies, let alone for the purchase of medical equipment Hospital Adolfo Prieto • The medical equipment is antiquated and the nurses and doctors do as much as they can with very little. • The Xray machine is from THE World War Two era so is the back up operating table which is some times used to fold laundry on. • The Hospital is so poor and ill-equipped; NOT even a computer, they use manual typewriters • Any piece of good medical equipment or any supplies are valuable to a Hospital in México 6

  11. Ceremony to Officially Recognize the Donation of Medical Equipment to Taxco

  12. PROJECT Equip Hospital Adolfo Prieto (The new Hospital the State of Guerrero is building in Taxco) • Medical equipment • Medical supplies • Office equipment The idea is to build on the success we had in getting RH Burton Co. of Ohio USA to donate that equipment We are confident that we can get the blood lab and heart equipment we need if we organize an operation that will systematically ask for that.

  13. Ophthalmic Equipment and Eye Surgery Center Donation Courtesy of RH Burton Company of Columbus Ohio USA

  14. TAXCO HOSPITAL PROJECT Guerrero State is building a new forty bed Taxco Hospital. But, there is NO budget at all for equipping the Hospital only for its construction, and that is rather far behind schedule. According to the State of Guerrero, the nurses and doctors are supposed to employ the worn out relics from Adolfo Prieto The medical equipment we have at the Adolfo Prieto Hospital is totally and hopelessly antiquated; also the new facility is four times larger, with two operating rooms - not only one which holds a lamp over the operating table on with duct tape The genesis of this project is the concerted effort to find a way to equip the new Hospital, that is scheduled for completion in 2004.

  15. Medical Equipment Manufacturers in the USA are always coming out with new models. The older versions they may take back in trade-ins are most valuable to our local Hospital which is very poor. We are confident that we can get valuable medical equipment donated to us or we can purchase things we especially need at discounts and auction RH Burton was the first company we asked. We asked them politely and they said that they had a refurbished modern eye care, diagnosis and surgery center An organized effort to solicit donations from medical manufacturers and with a budget for auction and opportunity purchases, we could fill tractor trailers.

  16. GUERRERO STATE SECRETARY OF HEALTH COMMENDS ARTCAMP AT INAUGURATION OF THE DONATED OPTHALMIC EQUIPMENT. Photo of Ophthalmic Equipment installed at Adolfo Prieto Hospital Artcamp’s Taxco Hospital project is a citizen volunteer/government collaboration addressing the health needs of community. Angelica Dominguez Diaz President of Artcamp SC de RL “Artesanas Campesinas” with Doctora Veronica Muños Parra, Secretary of Health of the State of Guerrero

  17. WE ARE SEEKING FOUNDERS FOR AN ORGANIZED EFFORT TO ADDRESS THE HEALTH NEEDS OF OUR PEOPLE In this preliminary stage we are seeing a few founders who will collaborate with us in constructing an effective resource raising effort for our public Hospital. The idea is to solicit cash donations and useful medical equipment and materials from business, organizations, charities, foundations, as well meaning people, everywhere in the world. With NO resources at all we did manage to get a donated an eye surgery center now installed in Adolfo Prieto Hospital.

  18. VISIT US IN TAXCO We will be very pleased an honored to have you visit us here in Taxco Taxco del Alarcon is a charming town built on the side of a mountain. Hernan Cortez came here in the Sixteenth Century Picturesque with redtile roof and white walls and bouganvilia Ask your travel agent about Taxco; there is information about our town. The Santa Prisca is the beautiful church, that people come from everywhere in the world to admire.

  19. TAXCO GUERRERO HAS GREAT HISTORICAL SUCCESS STORIES Taxco panorama Taxco Guerrero is a colonial town in the mountains of southern México. Taxco has a tradition of collaboration with foreigners some of the most famous of historical Taxquenans were foreigners. Jose de la Borda came to Mexico as an immigrant and settled in Taxco where he found great silver riches which he used to design and construct the Santa Prisca which stands as a monument to humanity the finest example of baroque churriegesco on thE American continents. Alexander de Humboldt, naturalist, geographer, minerologist, nation-builder, author of ‘Cosmos’ and celebrated traveller, is honored in Taxco where he was the first to identify the noche buena flower. William Spratling, architecture professor from Tulane University came to Taxco in the nineteen thirties and established the first modern silver workshop. Today, Taxco is world famous for its silver craftsmanship. These great ones are honored in Taxco with placques busts and museums and at civic festivals.Taxco has a unique provincial Mexican international culture and is a fine, friendly city

  20. WE CAN ACCOMPLISH A LOT • A little success goes a *long* way in Mexico; and with some help, we can bring in many valuable items for our local Hospital, defending our public health. • If we can pull together some resources and direct it at the medical needs of the poorest of northern Guerrero, an important and beneficial model for success will result. • Without resources, our rural womens artisans cooperative was able to get a company to donate valuable opthalmic equipment, and DHL International to transport it all and manage the customs procedures

  21. The donated opthalmic equipment PRESENT PROJECT IS BASED ON SUCCESSFUL MODEL • We now seek to organize a real of marketing effort devoted to raising donations for the benefit of the health services we provide the poor people of rural Mexico. • The idea is to solicit cash donations and useful medical equipment and materials for our Hospital from businesses, organizations. Govenrments, and individuals around the world. • In this preliminary stage we seek a few founders who will collaborate with us in constructing an effective resource generation effort.

  22. Acquire Medical Equipment at Auction or On Sale • Auctions of Bankrupt Hospitals and Clinics • Advertise on Internet Needed Equipment and Materials • Monitor Internet for Purchase Opportunities • Actively Solicit Discounts on basis of Humanitarian Volunteerism

  23. Transparency of Operations • The detailed official import manifest is the starting point for a relational data base documenting future use • Detailed documentation of the imported medical equipment • Total integrity is promised in order to assure the donors as well as the two governments. The exemplary transparency of the Taxco Hospital program will be an ideal selling-point to donors and to potential donors.

  24. ROTARIAN INTERNATIONAL We have good relations with the local Rotarians who offered to assist us. We were able to carry off the project without their help, yet this excellent organization is still here for Artcamp as a resource.

  25. DHL INTERNATIONAL DHL International responded to our solicitations for a donation of the flight of an eye surgery center from Ohio to Taxco Mexico

  26. here is an interesting action plan: International Donation Solicitation Marketing • Professional email/telephone/mail campaign of 1000 phone to make a market survey • Wealthy Individuals • Businesses • Medical Equipment suppliers • Fair Trade circles • NGOs and governments • Companies with illegal Mexican workers? • Internet Web Site Niches to Target • Advertising • Publicity

  27. here is a possible action plan: Solicit Donations from All Over the World (mostly from the USA) outbound telemarketing Marketing Method Donor Prospects include call/mail/email /mail/call Companies with illegal (no benefits) Mexican employees whose families in Mexico rely upon the public Hospital? Medical Equipment Manufacturers There are millions of illegal Mexicans working in the USA IS it fair to ask their employers for donations to our project? Cash Donations, Transportation Donations…. New and Used Medical Equipment Donations Companies seeking good publicity with Latinos. Call them. Talk to them. Ask for donations. Businesses can make donations into a fund that is exclusively used to purchase new and used medical equipment for donation to the public hospital of Adolfo Prieto, in Taxco México. Outbound Telemarketing Of course this business operation to generate donations of $$$ and of medical equipment for the Hospital would be registered and comply with all the laws of any country it was operating in. Call/email/mail/call/ email/call/email/mail A dynamic professional telephone marekting operation is at the heart of this proposal; the Hospital project has great ROI paying ten cents on the dollar for medical equipment

  28. Such a telemarketing/email operation as here describedwould have a twofold function 1. Solicit cash donations to finance the telemarketing operations 2. Solicit the donations of medical equipment and supplies from manufacturers and purchase equipment at good discounts when opportunities present themselves By getting perfectly good medical equipment at an average cost of NO MORE THAN ten cents on a dollar, this program shows an excelling ROI to social investor.

  29. The Adolfo Prieto Hospital Project reenforces public health service in the state of Guerrero • Propose an effective model of citizen-government collaboration • A new Guerrero emerges with improved indices of public health • A new Guerrero eventially emerges: heathy, optimistic, productive A DONATION FUND FOR MEDICAL EQUIPMENT FOR THE NEW TAXCO HOSPITAL

  31. T H U N D E R B I R D DIGITAL DIVIDE “I begin with two words that all men have uttered since the dawn of humanity: thank you. The word gratitude has equivalents in every language and in each tongue the range of meanings is abundant.” (Octavio Paz – Nobel Lecture Nobel Lecture, December 8, 1990) This presentation was made following the Digital Partners Social Enterprise Laboratory (SEL). Along with the entrepreneurs, a student team from Thunderbird, The American Graduate School of International Management and a group of business industry advisors contributed to its development. Work on the presentation spans from December 2000 to Mayo 2003. Without the assistance of Thunderbird, this work would not have been realized: thank you.
