Queen Jadwiga of Anjou (1374-1399). Coronation. Jadwiga of Anjou (1373/4 – July 17, 1399) was Queen of Poland from 1384 to her death. She was a member of the Capetian House of Anjou and the daughter of King Louis I of Hungary and Elisabeth of Bosnia.

  1. Queen Jadwiga of Anjou(1374-1399)

  2. Coronation • Jadwiga of Anjou (1373/4 – July 17, 1399) was Queen of Poland from 1384 to her death. She was a member of the CapetianHouse of Anjou and the daughter of King Louis I of Hungary and Elisabeth of Bosnia. • After the death of King Louis, upon request of Polish dignitaries, her mother destined her for the Polish throne. • At the age of ten, on November 16, 1384, she was crowned King of Poland.

  3. Marriage • Jagiello, the Grand Duke of Lithuania wanted to marry Jadwiga and promised to baptice himself and his pagan people joining with the Polish Kingdom. TheQueen of Poland agreed to the marriage and wedded Jagiello in 1386 for the benefit of the nation and the Church.Aware of her mission she supported spreading the Gospel in the pagan nation taking special care of the Godly service and unity of Chnistians. She speeded up the foundation of the Wilno Diocese as well.

  4. Achievements of the Queen of of Poland • She founded a dormitory for Lithuanians who were preparing for evangelizations of Lithuana at the Prague university. • In 1397, she obtained permission from the Pope Bonifacy IX to open the Theological Faculty at Cracow Academy

  5. Death In her Last Will, the queen contributed to reforming the University, which was afterwards named the Jagiellonian University. She profoundly loved Crucified Jesus and as his humble servant, full of prudence and wisdom, she served his Earthly Kingdom - building hospitals and helping the poor. The profoundness of her inner life was reflected in her devotion to people in need. She was a perfect example of the harmony of prayer and deed. She awaited long for the gift of maternity. When she was 25 she gave birth to a daughter who died soon after the delivery. After his daughter's death Jadwiga herself died on 17 July, 1399.

  6. Queen St. Jadwiga nowadays • She is called a mother of her people and mother of nations. On June 8, 1979 Pope John Paul II prayed at her sarcophagus; and the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacramentsofficially affirmed her beatificationon August 8, 1986. The Pope canonized Jadwiga in Kraków on June 8, 1997. Nowadays, she is a Patron saint of many schools
