  1. Color idioms in theEnglish language

  2. The aim • The aim of our work is to study color idioms, to share this information with the students, to make color idiom- songs book and a board game «Live a colorful life».

  3. Aim our tasks were: • 1) Firstly, to find the information on color idioms in the Internet, in the dictionaries, and in the songs. • 2) Secondly, to make two surveys among the students of our school before and after our work. We wanted to check their knowledge on our topic. • 3) Thirdly, our task was to create a color idiom songs book and a board game, which can be interesting to our classmates, teachers and help them remember them.

  4. Topicality • That it is very important and interesting to know such phraseological units as idioms, because they enrich our vocabulary and make our language very natural and colorful. Also they give us the opportunity to read English books, magazines, newspapers, to speak to English people and understand them.

  5. What is an idiom? • Idioms are words, phrases that cannot be taken literally. These combinations have a figurative meaning.

  6. Origin • 1) come from English customs and historic events. «blue stocking» • 2) from the Bible a)«the golden rule» (do as you would be done by) b) «as white as snow». (pure white) • 3)In Shakespeare literature we can find a lot of color idioms, too. a)the green eyed monster» (from Othello, it means “jealousy”) b)«to buy golden opinions» (good opinion) • 4) Also Charles Dickens, Jonathan Swift, Walter Scott gave us some wonderful idioms. «catch somebody red-handed». (to catch a person in the act of doing something wrong.) • 5) English has taken idioms from others languages. a) From Spanish “blue blood” ( a person of aristocratic) b) from American English “green light” (to give permission) c) from German (Speech is silver, silence is golden)

  7. We have two methods of translation: • 1) Literal or direct. – translation word – for – word. («black as coal» «red as blood») • 2) figurative method. We can’t translate the phrase literally, we convey the meaning with the help of explanation, interpretation. “A black eye”, “Be in the black”

  8. Pre-studying test The first step was pre-studying test. Students must choose the correct meaning of three idioms. It showed that their knowledge of idioms was not very good. The general level is 41%.

  9. Share the information! • The second step was to share the information we have found with the students and to play the game and sing English songs with color idioms. It was really fun!

  10. Post-studying test The last step was post-studying test. There were some idioms that were studied during our activities. The index is better than pre-studying test index. The general level is 85%. It means that our board game and our color idioms songs book promote children knowledge of idioms.

  11. Conclusion • We can say that we were completely right saying that the most effective way of studying and memorizing idioms is practicing them through singing songs and playing.
