MRnet exists: • To be the Manitoba Optical Regional Advanced Network (ORAN), in partnership with CANARIE. • To leverage available funding in order to meet CANARIE’s national mandate in Manitoba. • To facilitate and promote high-speed research and education networks. • To provide a province-wide R&E high-speed network in Manitoba that is connected to the national network which, in turn, is connected to the global research and education network. • To provide an institution-to-institution research and education network.

  3. MRnet’s mission is: 1. To enhance our members’ expertise in Advanced Networking Technologies and Applications through the use of a Manitoba high-speed research and education network. 2. To stimulate the development of new multimedia products and services by Manitoba business in our membership. 3. To stimulate research and educational use of high-speed network services and related information technology within Manitoba through our membership. 4. To stimulate cooperation in high speed networking research and development among our members including: Industry, Education, and all three levels of Government.

MRnetVision To continue to be a recognized national leader in providing a sustainable, advanced high-speed network to support research and education among industry, education, and governments through the plan period. • Providing an active, self-sustaining, pervasive, reliable, high-speed network infrastructure connecting all eligible member institutions for the purpose of research, development, and educational activity • Ensuring sustainability of the current infrastructure and evolving into providing greater provincial coverage (across Manitoba) as well as ensuring collaboration and sharing via the research and education network.

New AUP Within the broader goal to advance the development of the digital economy in Manitoba and Canada, MRnet network infrastructure and services are provided to support research, education, advanced application development and associated usage by Manitoba research, education, government, and industry organizations. The MRnet Network can be used for any legal purpose in support of this goal, so long as it does not interfere with or adversely affect the operation of the MRnet or CANARIE Networks or any network user, as may be determined by MRnet and/or CANARIE. MRnet reserves the right, through its governance processes, to modify this AUP from time to time.

Successes • Addressed key strategic commitments from 2006-2010 plan • Financial Stability (for now) • Access • 10gb connection to the north • All post secondary institutions, federal labs and high schools in the province are connected • Maintain low cost membership – no fee increases for last number of years (some offered to pay more) • Self sufficient • Internet transit • Telepresence infrastructure (possible because of low cost of MRnet connectivity) • Excellent relationship with Manitoba Hydro as a fibre provider • Significant user support • Organizational change and creation of an ED position

Areas of Focus 2011 – 2015 • Remove National network bottleneck in Manitoba • IPv6 migration • Peering • Improve Communications and Marketing • Continue Formal Tracking & Annual Reporting of Accomplishments (see mrnet.mb.ca) • Network Operations and Reporting • Offer SLA options at a price for those who want them • Service offerings on a a la cart basis • Increase Network redundancy • Contingency Planning for Non CANARIE options post 2012 • Link to the South
