    1. NSWEP Program Review Meeting “Hydrogen Development and Safety in Transportation Applications” Amber Broch and John Sagebiel Desert Research Institute February 16, 2006

    2. 2 Description/Background Investigate practical aspects of hydrogen production, storage, and use in transportation applications. Collaborate with NREL to contribute performance data to their technical data archive. Will directly support NREL/DOE goals of technology validation, safety and education. Collaborate with Washoe County Regional Transportation Commission (RTC)

    3. 3 RTC Collaboration MOU signed 2/8/06 RTC to provide to the project: 2 CNG vehicles Fuel Storage Other assistance (minor adjustments, repairs) RTC also assisting with drive cycle development. Benefits: Cost savings to project. Immediate application of research data. Tie-in with RTC will continue as their project develops.

    4. 4 Project Objectives To investigate performance and emissions trade-offs with CNG and HCNG. To gain experience modeling and testing that will translate into future work with fuel cell vehicles. To gain experience feeding data into NREL’s technical data archive to benefit future work with fuel cell vehicles.

    5. 5 Scope of Work Investigate code and safety considerations involved in setting up a hydrogen fueling station, a hydrogen testing facility, and in operating hydrogen powered vehicles Procure existing CNG vehicle and perform modeling, on-road and chassis dynamometer testing of performance and emissions to establish a baseline for the vehicle. Modify the vehicle to use HCNG, and repeat the testing to evaluate changes resulting from conversion.

    6. 6 Tasks Work will be accomplished through specific tasks Vehicle Modeling Infrastructure Assessment Evaluation and Plan for Hydrogen Vehicle Performance Testing Facility HCNG ICE vehicle conversion, performance testing and model verifications Fuel Supply and Distribution

    7. 7 Project Status/ Accomplishments Test vehicle has been selected: 1998 Ford E-350 5.4 L 3,600 psi CNG Para-transit bus donated to DRI by RTC. Testing and monitoring equipment has been obtained AutoEnginuity OBD-II Scan Tool DJ 5 Gas Analyzer Cal H2 Net Gap Analysis

    8. 8 Project Status/ Accomplishments Chassis-Dynamometer test facility has been identified Reno Jones West Ford Dealership has recently installed a chassis dynamometer and has granted DRI permission to use. Mustang MD-750 with eddy current power absorbers.

    9. 9 Project Status Tasks in Progress Nevada and Reno specific codes, regulations, and permitting for fueling station and those related to indoor use for testing facility at Redfield campus. Reno Municipal City Code NRS NAC WCAQMD/ Washoe County Health Department Vehicle Modeling– Preliminary CNG Vehicle

    10. 10 Vehicle Modeling Performance and fuel economy of conventional, and advanced vehicle models. Test the effect of parameter changes in vehicle components (such as motors, batteries, catalytic converters, climate control systems, and alternative fuels) and other modifications that might affect the fuel economy, performance, or emissions.

    11. 11 Vehicle Modeling Vehicle model will be based on Para-transit test vehicle geometry and components. Vehicle concepts to be modeled include: CNG baseline vehicle HCNG converted vehicle CNG and HCNG hybrid vehicles Hybrid vehicle models will be used only to illustrate the effect of the addition of an energy storage device, but will not be tested. Hybrid vehicle models will be used only to illustrate the effect of the addition of an energy storage device, but will not be tested.

    12. 12 Vehicle Modeling Engine Parameters ADVISOR has one component file containing data for a CNG engine (8.1L), but does not include any data related to a HCNG engine. 8.1 L CNG engine file does not have emissions related data. Engine and emissions maps must be created based on test data from dynamometer testing for 5.4L CNG and HCNG engine. Preliminary model will be based on scaled maps from an 8.1L CNG engine.

    13. 13 Conclusions & Next Steps Preliminary CNG vehicle testing this month. Emissions and Engine Map for modeling Obtain typical para-transit drive and route data for modeling and testing. Vehicle fuel conversion by City Engines and HCNG vehicle testing completed by June. Assess possibility of hydrogen vehicle testing facility at Redfield Campus. Finalize compilation of Nevada codes, standards, requirements, and permitting procedures for hydrogen infrastructure.

    14. 14 Technical Benefits Will support initiation of a hydrogen infrastructure in Reno, NV. Experience modeling, testing and feeding data to NREL’s technical data archive will benefit future work and support a transition to research on fuel cell vehicles. First major data customer will be RTC, who will benefit from our HCNG work.
