Jonathan Edwards • The Great Awakening • Puritan church was losing membership and power. • Ministers were sent to “revive” belief and attendance • Edwards preached “Sinners” to great effect, but was controversial • Membership temporarily rose, but soon fell again • Edwards died after volunteering to be a subject in the first smallpox vaccination attempt

  2. “Sinners in the Hands” • Very different from what Edwards usually preached • Audience was highly responsive—swooning and fainting • Example of “fire and brimstone” in preaching
