Redemption of the Land • Joshua 18:1-10 Joshua led the people to take possession of the land • Joshua divided the land for each tribe • Leviticus 25 After Egypt: Before Canaan • Rules for living in the land • Lord’s law and provision for the land itself • Sabbatical year: Sow land for six years, rest the seventh • Jubilee year: 50th year – everything reverted to its original state.

Redemption of the Land • If an Israelite became so poor he had to sell his property, provision was made to keep that land in his family. • The land could NOT be sold permanently • Num. 27:8-11; 36:7-9 Zelophehad’s daughters • Ruth 4 Naomi had to sell her land but kept it in the family • Num. 36:8 Daughters could not marry outside their tribe. If they did, the land did not go with them.

God’s Redemption of Israel • Ex. 6:1-8 The LORD remembered His covenant • They knew Him as: God Almighty El Shaddai • Now He will reveal Himself as LORD – Yahweh • God of Promises now known as the God who fulfills the Promises. • Ex. 12-13 Passover Lamb redeemed the firstborn and therefore the whole family • Ex. 13 Firstborn of every womb belonged to the Lord • Jesus is the firstborn of the dead Revelation 1:5

Redemption of Slaves • God not only redeemed Israel from slavery but He gave laws for future situations of slavery • Lev. 25:47-55 Law for when an Israelite sold himself as a slave to a stranger among them • Brother, uncle, cousin or blood relative could redeem • The people could NOT be permanent slaves • As the land belonged to the Lord, so did the people

Jesus as Kinsman Redeemer • Luke 1:67-75 God had already accomplished redemption for His people • Luke 2:38 Jesus was that redemption • Romans 3 Everyone needs redemption • John 1 and I Cor. 5 The believer should not have a lifestyle of sin. Jesus saved us from slavery to sin • Only a close relative can redeem • JESUS MAKES US ALL FAMILY!!!

Jesus as Kinsman Redeemer • Luke 1:30-35 Jesus was God and Man • Hebrews 2:17-18 Jesus was made like His brethren • Price for redemption: Jesus’ blood • Hebrews 9:12-14, 22 and I Peter 1:18-19 As the Passover Lamb, His blood saves those who believe • The kinsman had to be able and willing to redeem • Phil. 2:5-11 Jesus emptied Himself and became like us • John 10:14-18 He willingly laid down His life for us; no one took it from Him.

  8. What About YOU? • Eph. 1:7; Col. 1:14 There IS forgiveness of sin. There IS redemption through His blood • Acts 20:28 Jesus bought us with His own blood • Titus 2:14 “Jesus gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds.” • HOW SHALL WE THEN LIVE? • “Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock” • “Be shepherds of the church of God.”
