Union County High School Presents Senior Newsletter Jan. 16, 2014 SCHOLARSHIPS Edition LOCAL Scholarships ALL APPLICATIONS due by Friday, March 28, or if other date specified, to Mrs. Thomas/Mrs. Alsbrooks (MORE TO COME LATER) Union County Retired Teachers and United Community Bank Scholarship: Award of $1,000. Graduating senior pursuing a degree in education. See Mrs. Thomas for application. Old National Bank Community Service Matters-Kids Smart Saving: Award of $1,000. Reside in a community where Old National is located. Be a current Kid$ Start Savings account holder or ONBU Student Checking. Must demonstrate a commitment to a community service and provide documentation. May NOT be an employee or immediate family member of employee. See Mrs. Thomas for application. Deadline is March 10, 2014. Fraternal Order of Eagles #4209: Award of $500. Provide GPA, Rank, ACT, and income range. See Mrs. Thomas for application. Kentucky Farm Bureau Scholarship: Awards vary in amount. Must have either a minimum 3.5GPA or a minimum 23 ACT score and be the child of a Kentucky Farm Bureau member and remain such while the scholarship is in force. See Mrs. Thomas for application. Deadline is February 28, 2014. Union County Rotary Club: Award of $1,000. This is a one time, non-renewable scholarship. Must be a resident of Union County and must attend a college, university, vocational school full-time. See Mrs. Thomas for application. Alliance Coal Scholars Program: Award of $500 to $1,000. Must be a dependent child of a full-time Alliance Coal employee who has a minimum of one year of continuous employment. Must be a high school senior planning to attend an accredited college, university, or vocational school. Deadline is the first week in March (exact deadline to be announced later). Applications available through Alliance Coal. Union County Beef Producers: Student must be majoring in agricultural field, preferably beef or food science. Resident of Union County given first preference, as well as member of UC Beef Producers. Minimum of 2.5GPA. Involvement in FFA, 4-H, steering and livestock judging important factor. See Mrs. Thomas for application. The Coleman & Hazel Brinkley Memorial Scholarship: Award of $250. Exhibit honesty, show integrity, possess a positive attitude, demonstrate high moral values, excel academically and display leadership potential. See Mrs. Thomas for application. Dr. Doug Hines Scholarship: Award of $150. Preference given to male, then female basketball player. See Mrs. Thomas for application. Union County Farm Bureau Scholarship: Family must be a member of Union County Farm Bureau. Student is pursuing a career in agriculture or ag-related business. This Scholarship can be worth up to $1000, at $500/semester renewable for 2 semesters, as long as the recipient maintains a 3.0 GPA and is in full-time student status. See Mrs. Thomas for application. Mike Thomas Scholarship: Award of $250. Based on student’s contribution to the school, community, and wrestling program. See Mrs. Thomas for application.

  2. Individual/Private/Organizations Scholarships • USbank Scholarship: Our Scholarship Program is available to high school seniors (graduating in the 2013-2014 year). Winners will be selected at random. Scholarship Program is exclusively for web visitors and online application is the only way to apply. Application available in Late January and deadline is May 31, 2014. Visit https://www.usbank.com/community/financial-education/scholarship.html • State Farm National Merit $2500 Scholarships: These are one-time, nonrenewable awards of $2,500 made to high school seniors who qualify as Finalists in the annual National Merit Scholarship Program. For more information, please contact National Merit Scholarship Corporation at (847) 866-5100. • McDonald’s Scholarship: • High School seniors selected from all states. Awards are $2,500 or $5,000. More information located at • http://www.aboutmcdonalds.com/mcd/student_zone/scholarships.html • American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Program: $1500 to $18,000 • It’s “A Constitutional Speech Contest.” Must give an 8 to 10 minute speech on some aspect of the Constitution of the United States with emphasis on the duties and obligations of a citizen to our government. Must give a 3 to 5 minute speech for an assigned topic in order to test speaker’s knowledge of the subject. See Mrs. Thomas for details. • Bluegrass Community Foundation: This website includes up to 10 scholarship for Kentucky residents. Awarded amounts vary and deadlines too. Must have a 3.5 or a 23 ACT score and child of a Kentucky Farm Bureau member. Deadline is Feb. 28, 2014. (These scholarships are not just for “farm” related careers.) Application located at https://www.kyfb.com/federation/scholarships/ • Kentucky Wesleyan: STEM Scholarship • Minimum 3.0GPA and ACT 24 (or above) or SAT 1100 (or above). Demonstrate financial need and pursuing a degree in a STEM related area (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). More located at www.kwc.edu/stem. Deadline January 29, 2014. • Maple Leaf Dentistry Scholarship: $500 Deadline: May 30, 2014 • Contributed at least 100 hours of volunteer service in the last 2 years. 3.0 GPA or greater • Applications can be found: http://www.peterboroughdentists.com • McDonald’s Scholarship: • High School seniors selected from all states. Student must be a the child of someone who has had breast cancer or who has died from it. Deadline March 15, 2014. Teach one semester in KY for each semester or summer terms scholarship is received. Scholarships are available after a student completes one year in the program. Awarded based on student performance in the athletic training room and classroom. Murray State University: Phi Delta Kappa International scholarship for those pursuing a career in education through Murray State University. Deadline March 1, 2014.
