The Foundations - 1998 1 • Visionaries (landholders & champions): • A response to the communities needs • Integration of full catchment management thinking • Uniting all landholders across the catchment addressing social boundaries of the localised Landcare structure • Volunteer driven • 4 sub-catchments • Traditional committee structure

The Foundations – 1998-2003 1 • Over the next 5 years….. • Approximately $500,000 in funding of projects targeting dry-land salinity • Creation of the Little River Catchment Management Plan & 20 BMO’s, Biodiversity Assessment, Socio Economic Assessment, Feral Pests Assessment • Networks begin to establish • The MESSAGE project………..

  12. The Plateau – 2003-04 2 Hit the wall • Volunteer burn out • Financial restrictions • Lack of volunteer capacity to deliver large scale project • $12,000 from Mid Macquarie to employ a secretary • Create a professional platform for the employment of a Catchment Manager for the MESSAGE project

The Climb– 2004-2011 • Introduction of a business model with a professional capacity • Building of a team • Locals who are respected and trusted in the community • Knowledge of community dynamics • Staff who are volunteers within the community & know the needs of the people • Approximately $4million in funding Ability to act spontaneously to address the needs of the catchment.

  14. The Fall - 2011-2012 3 • Lack of job security • Lack of succession planning • Unskilled leadership • Volunteer burn out • Lack of passion and vision • Poor financial planning • Management Committee imbalance

  15. The Rise Again – 2012- today 4 • Listen to the members • Management Committee based on skills, not only passion/interest • Strategic thinking • Strong financial planning • Strong, positive leadership CURRENT CHALLENGES: • Lack of job security for staff • Financial uncertainty

  19. What makes us successful? Financial efficiency (avg of 15 yrs) For every $ received .91c is invested in on-ground or capacity building projects. Only .9c is used on “admin” .91c

  20. Mental Health Target (2006)– We will not lose any of our members to suicide & we will break down the local stigma associated with mental health

  21. Women in the Landscape Target: To engage farming women in natural resource management and improve their confidence to become active decision makers in their farming business & community

Our Key Messages • Listen to your people (they tell you a lot!) • Match your scale to your organisations capacity • Become strategic…..not just planners • Look after your staff • Seek a skills based committee – passion isn’t always sustained • Plan for succession – staff and committee • Act with integrity, honour your word & respect everyone • Think out side of the box – seek opportunities • Don’t take no for an answer & have a voice
