Defined: • Behavior patterns or mental processes that cause serious personal suffering and/or interfere with the person’s ability to cope with every day life. • Symptoms: • Atypical • Maladaptive • Emotional discomfort • Socially unacceptable behavior • Culture Bound Syndromes • Spirit possession • DSMV – Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, version 5 - - lists all classified illnesses.

Bell Curve Stress Reactions • AKA “Defense Mechanisms” • Repression - - push it down • Regression - - child-like behaviors • Rationalization - - “excuses” • Displacement - - take it out on someone or something else • Projection - - see your own faults in other people • Reaction Formation - - act opposite of what you feel • Denial - -refuse to accept reality • Sublimation - - channel stress in healthy way • Passive aggression - - covert manipulation of another person

Samples • AKA “Defense Mechanisms” • Repression - - “I don’t want to deal with it” • Regression - - Scream and cry like a child • Rationalization - - “Everyone does it” • Displacement - - angry at spouse, yell at child • Projection - - You consider “cheating”….accuse partner of impure thoughts • Reaction Formation - - “I’m fine” • Denial - - “She would never do that to me!” • Sublimation - - Running, Boxing, Writing • Passive aggression - - “Oh, I am sorry, did I forget your birthday?”

Somatoform • Any expression of distress through a physical symptom:bandits • Conversion disorder • Change in or loss of function in a part of the body with no medical explanation • “False Pregnancy” • Hypochondria • Preoccupation/fear of developing a disease • Headache means brain tumor • BDD • Excessive concern over perceived physical deformity • Addicted to plastic surgery

Mood Dep • Depression - -feelings of helplessness, worthlessness, guilt, and great sadness. • Symptoms of major depression: • Depressed mood most of the day • Loss of interest • Weight changes • Sleep changes • Changes in physical and emotional reactions’ • Fatigue • Difficulty concentrating • Contemplation of self-harm • Bipolarity – dramatic ups and downs in mood • Inflated self-esteem, jittery, excessive talking / switching subjects, racing thoughts, difficulty concentrating
