  • Plan your answer.

  • Outline a product specification.

  • What information has already been given in the question that I can use as part of my outline specification?

  • What are the safety requirements of the product?

  • What assumptions can I make about how the product should perform?

  • How has ergonomics influenced the design of the product?

  • How has aesthetics been used to influence the appeal of the product?

  • What features have been included in the product to improve its function?

There are 6 marks available for this but you should aim to write more than 6 statements.

Remember to clearly state which product you are writing about.

Oban high school design technology department

  • (b) Give 4 reasons why the design of one of the products makes it suitable for mass production.

  • Will the materials used to make the product impose a restriction on the choice of production methods that can be used?

  • Will the complexity of the shape of the parts of the product determine that a certain production method is used?

  • Will the type of construction, joining or assembly methods used make the product suitable for a particular type of production?

  • What quantity is to be produced?

  • Has a stock size of material been used?

  • Has the same part been used more than once in the product?

  • Remember to state what product you are referring to, one at a time.

Oban high school design technology department

  • Justify the choice of materials used in both products.

  • In what type of environment is the product expected to be used?

  • Consider the safety of the person who uses the product.

  • How is the product expected to perform? (weight, stability, strength, etc.)

  • Consider the appearance of the product to its intended market group.

  • What type of manufacturing processes have been used to make the product?

  • Is the material able to be recycled or reused?

  • Remember to state what product you are referring to,

  • one at a time.

  • Back up what you say with an example and don’t repeat

  • yourself. There are 4 marks available so 4 valid, justified

  • comments should be made.

Oban high school design technology department

  • (d) Describe the health, safety and environmental issues that are associated with both products and their manufacture.

  • The damage to the environment as a result of preparing the raw materials for production (renewable and non-renewable materials).

  • The waste, by products and pollution produced during the production process

  • Legislation and British Standards for safety for the product during use

  • The pollution caused by using the product

  • The power and energy needed to operate the product

  • How the product is to be recycled or reused after its useful life is over

  • How safe the product is while in use

  • Try to back up your claim by giving a reason which in your opinion justifies the point you are making.

  • Try not to repeat yourself. This question is worth four marks, therefore at least four points should be made.

Oban high school design technology department

  • For both products describe the quality assurance issues that would concern

  • The manufacturer

  • The user.

  • The manufacturer will be concerned with the:

  • Quality of the raw materials delivered.

  • Prompt and efficient delivery of the materials (Just In Time Production).

  • Accuracy and precision of each part prior to assembly

  • Efficiency of the production team to meet deadlines

  • Performance of the finished product and how well it meets health and safety legislation

  • The user will be concerned with:

  • Safety of the product and its ease of use

  • Effect the product will have on the environment

  • Product’s ability to perform to the same standard over time

  • Ability for the product to be repaired and maintained

  • Guarantees and warranties issued with the product

Oban high school design technology department

  • Features and functions and what benefits they provide.
