  1. 3.2: Solving Application Problems Objectives: • Create equations to solve application problems You will see the set up for section problems in the following slides

  2. Problem 1 Cost to produce a shirt. According to the world trade organization in 2005, it was cheaper to make a t-shirt in northern China than anywhere else. In Mexico, in costs 16 cents less than 3 times as much as it does in China. The cost to produce one shirt in each country totals $3.28. x + (3x - .16) = 3.28 Mexico + China = 3.28

  3. Sage and Scribe Problem 2 CSEC purchased a copy machine for $2100 and a 1 year maintenance protection plan that costs 2 cents per copy. If the spent a total of $2462 in a year, how many copies were made? 2100 + .02x = 2462

  4. Problem 3 Cable T.V. costs $72.68 per month plus $3.95 for each pay per view movie. If a one month bill was $96.38 How many pay per view movies were watched? 3.95x + 72.68 = 96.38

  5. Problem 4 U-haul charges $20 per day plus .25 cents a mile . Ryder charges $35 per day plus .15 cents a mile. How far could a person drive in order for the two companies to cost the same? 20 + .25x = 35 + .15x

  6. Problem 5 You have been offered two jobs! Job 1 pays $40,000 with a $2400 raise each year. Job 2 pays $49,600 with a $800 raise each year. In how many years will the two salaries be the same? 40000 + 2400x = 49600 + 800x

  7. Problem 6 • An HP printer costs $499, and a cannon costs $419. The HP costs 0.06 cents per copy, and the cannon costs 0.8 cents per copy. How many pages can you print for the two printers to cost the same? • 499 + .06x = 419 + .8x
