Medics can dispense healhpacks, engineers could fix and build turrets, soldiers could carry rocket launchers) Emphasized teamwork and cooperation between players

Ultima’s success lies in the heart of its community • The online communities are dedicated, creative, and generally outgoing • Player created establishments within the game: Rune libraries, online wedding chapels, online museums and shops, all owned and maintained by the players as opposed to the NPC’s.

H A L F – L I F E • In 1998 the world of first-person shooters would change again as Sierra releases Half-Life • Features amazing story telling along with awesome gameplay • The online community begins to thrive as gamers and amateur game designers start churning out mods – modifications- for Half-Life

  16. 1999 • 1999 would become a revolutionary year for online gaming. • Sony releases Everquest – destined to become an extremely popular MMORPG • Counter-Strike mod is released for Half-Life – soon to become an extremely popular FPS game • Id software does it again, this time releasing Quake 3 Arena – This will lead to many professional game tournaments and sponsored events

  17. The Current Craze • World of Warcraft is perhaps the most popular MMORPG out there today • It is based on the Warcraft universe created by Blizzard Entertainment of Diablo 2 and Warcraft 3 fame • Subscription numbers in the billions
