  1. What will we talk about? Why should I know? What is Physics?

  2. What is Physics? • The study of the physical world • The interaction of matter and energy through forces • Great…but what does that mean?

  3. PhysicsThe Most Basic Science • Physics is the study of the nature of basic things • How matter and energy behave in many different situations • Physics supports chemistry • how matter is put together • Chemistry supports biology • how living matter behaves…yikes, that’s a doozy

  4. I heard physics is really hard and no one can understand it… • Nonsense! You are more familiar with the fundamental concepts of physics than you are of those of chemistry or biology • Ever see evolution and adaptation occurring? Didn’t think so… • Think of this class as a “rule book” • You can appreciate the game better if you know the rules • You will appreciate the world better once you know the simplicity and patterns that govern your experiences

  5. What about the math? I’m not good at math and I heard that physics is just a harder math class… • Mathematics is the “language of science” • In the 1600’s, science is transformed by the realization that math could be used to analyze, describe, model, and predict motion • Thanks in large part to the hero of our story, Newton • Physics equations are systems of connections between different concepts that follow a logical pattern

  6. The Scientific MethodPlease…not again… • I’m not a scientist. How does this apply to me and my life? • Scientific Method = organized way of solving problems • What am I trying to accomplish? • What do I think should happen? / What do I have to work with? • Come up with a plan • Do it!! (Plug & Chug) • How did I do?
