  1. The Kingdom of God & its Mission 3 By Alexander Venter

  2. Kingdom of God & it’s mission Talk 1: Kingdom theology and its Mission Talk 2: KOG and Healing, Signs and Wonders Talk 3: KOG and Personal Transformation Talk 4: KOG and Social Transformation Talk 5: KOG and World Missions (The End)

  3. “The powers of the coming age…” Personal Transformation Social Transformation Is Vineyard fulfilling the mission? “Renewal of all things…” “A New Creation in Christ…..” > > > The problem of selective obedience Power Encounter (Signs & Wonders) World Missions

  4. Personal Transformation:OT picture-promises Exodus: YHWH delivers/calls a people for himself to be HOLY – kings, priests & prophets (Ex 19, Num 11) He (trans)formed them to rule & reign with him Davidic Monarchy: “a man after God’s heart”, integrity of heart, character, values… holy The Prophets: When Messiah comes he will make a new covenant, a new person with a heart of flesh, with his Spirit in them, with his Torah written in their heart & mind (Jer 31, Ezek 36)

  5. Personal Transformation:The Future Age Reality We will be conformed – and ongoingly trans-formed – into the image of his Son… Holy Our resurrected-transfigured bodies will mirror this Spirit-Saturation, this Word-Obedience In face to face union with God, caught up into the Dance of the Trinity (“Perichoeresis”) We will be kings and priests ruling/reigning with Christ throughout the eternal ages

  6. KOG: Personal Transformation Jesus fulfills the OT and brings the future age into the present (the “ancient-future faith”) “Except you are born again (from above), you cannot enter the Kingdom of God” John 3:3 A new heart in a new covenant (Word & Spirit) “In Christ you are a new creation, the old has passed away, the new has come” 2Cor 5:17 In Christ is the “one new humanity” of reconciliation and transformation, Eph 2:15 Jesus announced KOG and formed communityin & thru which personal transformation happens

  7. The Great Omission Jesus commissioned his disciple-community: “I’ve been put in charge and given the say over everything in the heavens and the earth Therefore go and make apprentices of me from people of all types, all nations… how? By plunging them into the reality of the Trinitarian God – the life & love of the Trinity And by teaching & training them to end up obeying everything I have commanded you And I’ll be with you by my Spirit, at your side, within you, till the job is done!”

  8. Jesus: Being a Kingdom disciple Being an “already – not yet” person, living in eschatological tension, which transforms us Jesus taught us to pray: “Your Kingdom come, your will be done on this piece of earth (me) as it is in heaven”… “not my will but yours be done” “If you want to be my disciple, you must deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow me” “If you hold to my teachings then you’re really my disciples & you’ll know the truth…” “Seek first the KOG and its righteousness…” “Be perfect (holy) as your Father is perfect”

  9. Paul: Being a Kingdom person “For, if by the sin of one man death reigned, how much more will those who receive God’s gift of righteousness REIGN in LIFE through one man, Jesus the King?” (Rom 5:17) “For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son… and those he predestined he also called; those he called he also justified; and those he justified he also glorified…” (Rom 8:28-29) “To the church of God… to those sanctified in King Jesus, called to be holy” (1Cor 1:2)

  10. Paul: Personal Transformation Our position in Christ (Reality) Glorified Foreknew Predestined Sanctified Transformation Called Our current life (reality) Justified God has saved... being saved... will be saved, 2Cor 1:10

  11. Caught between the times: Living contradictions Paul, 2 Corinthians: “Already” “Not yet” people: “Thanks be to God who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ” (2:14) Already But then also... “we were under great pressure, beyond our ability to endure, so we despaired even of life” (1:8) Not yet Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling. 5:2

  12. “We have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. 8 We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; 9persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. 10 We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. 11 For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus' sake, so that his life may be revealed in our mortal body. 12 So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you.” (2Cor 4:7-10)

  13. Two Ages “battling” in us... • Old age • Old nature (“put off”) • The ‘flesh’ • Law • Condemnation • Bondage • Death • New age • New nature (“put on”) • The Spirit • Grace • Justified (aquitted) • Freedom • Life

  14. Concluding Comments Accept yourself: you are a living contradiction! You won’t get out of this “tension” till Jesus comes (learn to live in tension and trust God) Don’t escape into either “already”or “not yet”(Triumphalism or Defeatism) Trust God for transformation happening within you by… (its slow but sure & progressive IF we…) The Holy Spirit working thru spiritual disciplines in and accountable to HIS community of disciples It will get better … and harder. Don’t despair!
