A History of ‘Healthy’ Fast Food 1979: Wendy’s becomes first fast-food chain to offer salad bar 1986: McDonald’s offers its first salad 1991: McDonald’s introduces McLean Deluxe 1995: Taco Bell launches Border Lights menu 1996: McDonald’s phases out McLean 1997: Taco Bell scraps Border Lights 2000: McDonald’s introduces McSalad Shakers 2002: Burger King launches veggie burger; Wendy’s launches Garden Sensations salads However, Wendy’s Chicken BLT salad w/ honey-mustard dressing and garlic croutons has more calories, more sodium, and more cholesterol than Wendy’s Classic Single burger, and twice as much fat (47.5g) 2003: McDonald’s scuttles McSalad Shakers; launches ‘premium’ entrée salads
