  3. October 7, 1864 Dear mother, I am writing to you from Richmond, Virginia. It is very muggy and humid here. As you can see in the photograph, we just finished burning the whole city to the ground. I have never seen such destruction and death before. I believe the Confederates will give up soon, it is only a matter of time. They have nothing left. I hope this war ends soon and I can return home.
