  2. humanitarians • “people who work to improve the conditions of others” • Charles Dickens: He wrote books that demonstrated how poor living conditions were---tried to gain sympathy and encourage change and government involvement • Utilitarianism: Laws used to make the greatest happiness for the greatest number

Humanitarians cont. • John Stuart Mill: Government’s job is to work towards the greater good of its people • Mill said that the government needed to listen to the voice of its people • All people should have a vote • Poor needed protection since they could not fend for selves • Factory Act (limited conditions on children) • Ten Hours Act (limited the hours people could work) • Mixed results for this

  4. Collective Action • Strikes: groups of workers band together and don’t work until their needs are met • Unions: Groups of workers pay into a group that will help support their needs • Union representatives would use collective bargaining • Film clip (newsies)

  5. How to deal with unions • Blacklisting • Signed a contract not to join • Violence • Fire them all • Starve them out
