  3. General Effects of the Abuse of Drugs • Depressant effect (DOWNERS) • Nervous system slows down, including alertness • Stimulant effect (UPPERS) • Highly excitable and unusual brain activity • Hallucinogen effect • Imagining things that are not present

  4. Addiction • Dependence on the use on the use of a substance to function • Substances that are highly addictive have ingredients that tells that brain that the body craves for these substances

  5. Consequences of Addiction • Prolonged intake results to serious and even permanent physical, social or emotional damage • Withdrawal symptoms such as body aches, muscle cramps, tiredness, vomiting or delirium multiple times before the body gets rid of the dependence on drugs • Addicts may do criminal acts to satisfy their addiction
