  3. What’s at the centre of your world? • Devices • Multi-function  less devices? • Smart  more possibilities • Nothing is at the centre • black box • PC • Master controller • Nothing is at the centre… except services

  4. Why no Service Providers? • Distracted ‘we are restructuring’ • Conservative ‘we don’t take risks’ • Broke ‘we bought the wrong telco’ • Independently minded ‘we’ll do it by ourselves’

  5. What’s the answer? • New alliances? • Shared risks, rewards, marketing and infrastructure • New breed service providers • ISP’s all over again? • Remember the dinosaurs

  6. Hub-and-spoke model • Point to point services will not work in the long run • Business relationships are too complicated • Technologically cumbersome • Operators – key position in value chain • Bundles own and third-party services as a trusted partner to consumers • Economies of scale (marketing, CRM, billing) Service Provider Device Network e-Home Operator Service Provider Device Network Service Provider Device Network

  8. How to solve? • Basic DIY security use cases: • When camera detects motion, email is send to platform which feeds email into XTN Hub event-handling. Video feed is stored at platform for later handling • User can access camera with various UI devices from outside the home and view video feed Network Remote Access Home WiFi Camera (e.g. LinkSys, D-Link, Veo). With build-in Web Server, SW-based motion detection and email-trigger. Event-handling and picture storage at Services Platform GSM GPRS HTTP WiFi Hot Spot Operator‘s Service Delivery Platform • Central features: • Various remote user interfaces • Executes application and services logic • Runs operator‘s core services • Enables (third party) service provider access UPnP 802.11x WiFi Access Point + Router DSL* Modem 802.11x 10BT HUGE 10BT 10BT Splitter IP DSLAM* • Extrada UPnP Gateway Emulator • UPnP Control Point • with WAN Routing • allows device detection from Services Platform Switch NT *Example is with DSL, it would be similar with cable modem PSTN/ISDN Network

  9. How to solve? • Microsoft XP Media Center Edition PC as Entertainment Hub: • Central storage for video, music and picture files + normal computing • Connects to TV and Remote Control • Recording and Time-Shift TV • Homeportal XTN Connector to MCE runs on PC and allows access to the services and applications on Services Platform and, thus, to other networking elements Network Remote Access Home GSM GPRS HTTP WiFi Hot Spot Operator‘s Service Delivery Platform • Central features: • Various remote user interfaces • Executes application and services logic • Runs operator‘s core services • Enables (third party) service provider access UPnP 802.11x WiFi Access Point + Router DSL* Modem 802.11x XTN Connector for MCE 10BT HUGE 10BT 10BT or 802.11x Splitter IP DSLAM* Media Center PC Switch NT *Example is with DSL, it would be similar with cable modem PSTN/ISDN Network

  10. How to solve? • Low-cost adapters as bridge to control network: • e.g. i.Lon, EIB-UPnP Bridge, X.10 adapters etc. • service logic runs at Services Platform Outside Home Remote Access GSM GPRS HTTP WiFi Hot Spot Control Network Adapter Operator‘s Services Delivery Platform • Central features: • Various remote user interfaces • Executes application and services logic • Runs operator‘s core services • Enables (third party) service provider access 10BT UPnP 802.11x WiFi Access Point + Router DSL* Modem XTN Connector for MCE 802.11x 10BT HUGE 10BT 10BT or 802.11x Splitter IP DSLAM* Media Center PC Switch NT *Example is with DSL, it would be similar with cable modem PSTN/ISDN Network

  11. Service Platform is the answer • Networks and application independent • Trusted broker between service providers, operators, infrastructure, devices • Services-centric, not customer premises equipment central • Supports any mixture of ‘thin’ and ‘thick’ gateways, devices and protocols • Industrial-grade, open standards, robust, reliable, secure and scalable
