  3. Budget Repair Bill • 2011-2012 State Budget • Almost 1 billion cut from MPS school system • The art, foreign language, music, and physical education programs will be cut • Teachers are forced to teach multiple subjects

  4. Empower the Arts We propose that Wisconsin Lutheran College hosts a workshop for the Arts, inviting MPS high school students to revive their passion of music, art, and theatre.

  5. The Event Basics • Who: • MPS high school students involved or interested in music, theatre, and art, along with their parents. • WLC faculty and students within these departments. • What: • Empower the Arts: A workshop event celebrating the Arts.

The Event Basics • Where: • WLC Fine Arts Building and REX • When: • Fall 2011 (October) • Why: • A way to revive and empower the love of the Arts, in response to the loss of art programs in Milwaukee Public Schools. • A recruiting and informational opportunity for WLC. • A way for our campus to give back to Liberal Arts Education.

Schedule of Events • Arrival and registration: 9:30am • Students receive folder of information • Informed of signup sheets • Place their artwork on display • Speaker Dr. Gregory Schulz: 10am • Lunch provided by Sodexo: 11am • Performances by WLC choirs, band, and string ensemble • Guests can view the student art displayed, which was brought for the event

  8. Schedule of Events • Break into individual departments: 12:30pm • Students are able to interact with professors and students in their desired program. • Learn how they can participate in programs outside their schools. • Tours of Fine Arts Building: 1:30pm • Music, Art, and Theatre wings

Schedule of Events • Theatre workshop: 3-5pm • Acting Your Song • Exploring Subtext • Silent Subtext • The Actor's Bag of Tricks (explores various techniques) • Stage Makeup (old age or animal or some other) • Theatre Games for Expanding Imagination • Walk into Character • Costume to Character

  10. Schedule of Events • Art Workshop: 3-5pm • Explore new mediums • Hands-on creation • Speak with art majors • Learn new techniques • View college exhibits • Discuss favorite artists and inspirations

  11. Schedule of Events • Music workshop: 3-5pm • Speak with music majors • Learn about the music lab • Talk about private lessons • Sing along with WLC choir students • Discuss favorite music artists, groups, and ensembles

Benefits of the Workshop • Empowering high school students • Despite the budget cuts, they still have options to continue their passions. • Reminding them of the important skills they learn from the Arts, which will benefit them in their lives, not to mention their college search • Connecting high school students with college role models.

Benefits to WLC • Recruitment for Arts education programs, as well as the school in general • A way to give back to the MPS School Systems, as a Christian Liberal Arts College • Opportunity for WLC students to give back to their community and use their talents to empower younger students • Exposure for WLC in the community, especially MPS high schools

  14. Budget • Expected to be the same cost as any College Visit Day hosted by the Admissions Dept. • Possible expenses: • Food • Printed materials • Advertising • Art supplies used
