Center - Example • Based on hadron calorimetry for CMS. • Long project duration to attract participants from local schools. • Collaboration with other universities and labs (national and international). • Readout boxes for scintillation tile calorimetry. • Teachers learn about detectors and calorimeters and their application in particle physics and for the CMS experiment. • Teachers/students participate in the detector construction project, 3-4 year duration. • Fabrication and Q/C studies. • Assembly tests at Fermilab, beam tests and assembly at CERN. • Teachers and students participate on-line and off-line in analysis and other group activities over the lifetime of the CMS project • Participation in group milestones, experimental milestones, and LHC turn-on. • Awareness of other important physics, scientific, and cultural milestones.

Center - Example • EOI - submitted via WWW by 14 Dec 98 • At least two physicists identified for center. • Proposal - submitted via WWW by 7 Feb 99 • Physicists and lead teachers write up a summer research plan in which the lead teachers participate, and during which these teachers will develop resource materials used later with associate teachers at the Center in the next program year. • Center Approval Notification - 22 Feb 99 • Two lead teachers identified - 15 Mar 99 • Summer Research - developed Spring 99, implemented Summer 99 • Lead teachers learn about particle physics and calorimetry. Participate in construction and assembly and Q/C of detector items at the Center and Fermilab. • Teachers participate interactively with beam tests at CERN • Year 2 - developed Fall 99 • Lead teachers and physicists develop research experience for 10 more teachers at the center.

  13. Summary • Project Staff in place. • Funding proposals submitted - we are awaiting word from NSF/ESIE. • EOIs expected within a 2-week period. • Full proposals expected by early February. • We are preparing enthusiastically for the first summer of the program.
