  1. LEAVE A BLANK PAGE • Your homework tonight is to complete a title page for: • GEOGRAPHIC SKILLS

  2. Map Direction & Distance L.O: Identify directions on maps of varying scales – Local, national, global. • Starter: Make a list of things you would use a map for.

  3. Direction – Rose Compass • When using directions, we stick to the 4 main cardinals: • North • East • South • West • There are many different ways of remembering the order – Never Eat Sour Worms…

  4. Direction – Rose Compass • Things aren’t always in a direct line following these cardinals, so we also have inter-cardinals: • NE • SE • SW • NW

  5. Direction – Compass Rose • Finally we also have sub-cardinals for everything that falls between the lines: • To find the sub-cardinal, first name the nearest cardinal point – NESW • Then locate the nearest inter-cardinal – NE SE SW NW • Put it together – eg. Nearest cardinal is North, nearest sub-cardinal is North East. Answer is North North East (NNE).

  6. Compass Rose Activity • Using the compass app on your iPad (or a real compass from me), find the compass direction of 8 people in the classroom • Complete the Town Directions. • Complete Country to Country.

  7. Directions - Bearings • Along with compass rose directions, we sometimes use bearings. • Bearings use 3600 as directional guides. • North is 0 or 360 • East is _______ • South is _______ • West is _______ • Now try inter-cardinals

  8. Direction - Bearings

  9. L/O: Identify directions on maps of varying scales – Local, national, global. • Where are we on our progress line? • How much progress have you made? I fully understand the LO I’m not really sure what the LO is about
