  1. Quiz– 10 Points + BonusJeopardy Theme song • Rick is an auto detailer and is paid $12.75 an hour. He averages 35.25 hours per week of work. What is his average straight time pay? • Jim is working 35 hours this week and he is paid $8.25 per hour. How much will Jim’s straight-time pay be this week? • Jordan is a broadcast technician and earns $17.00 an hour with time and a half for overtime. Last week she worked 40 hours plus overtime. If her total pay was $839.38, how many hours of overtime did Jordan work? Let H = overtime hours

  2. Quiz - Solutions • 12.75 x 35.25 = 449.44 • 35 x 8.25 = 288.75 • (17 x 40) + (17 x 1.5 x h) = 839.38 • 680 + 25.50h = 839.38 • 25.50h = 159.38 • 25.50h/25.50 = 159.38/ 25.50 • h= 6.25 hours

  3. Warm –up Problem • 40 hours at 16.20 per hour • 8 overtime hours • Calculate regular straight time pay, overtime pay, and total gross pay • 40 x 16.20 = 648 • 16.20 x 1.5 x 8 = 194.40 • 648 + 194.40 = 842.40

  4. Warm up Problem:Algebra Concept for Life (PSSA)  • Logical/mathematical learning: • Write and Solve • Total of 9 coins (dimes and nickels)worth .65 cents • How many of each do you have? • Let n = the number of nickels • Let 9-n = the number of dimes • .05n + .10(9-n) = .65 • .05n +.90 - .10n = .65 (combine like terms) • -.05n = -.25 (divide both sides by -.05) • *n = 5 • 5 = nickels, 4 dimes

  5. Lesson Objective Compute total pay on a piecework basis. piecework A worker receives a specified amount of money for each item of work completed. Content Vocabulary • piecework

  6. Mr. P’s Story on Piecework

  7. Dylan works for National Cabinet Company. He is paid $15.00 for each cabinet he assembles. Last week he assembled 45 cabinets. This week he assembled 42. What is his pay for each week? • $___15.00_______ x __42____ = $____630______ • $____15.00____ x __45____ = $___675_____

  8. The Sunscreen Company sells and installs window film for automobiles. Sara Miller manages one Sunscreen shop. She reports that during the past week, her shop applied window film to 19 autos. It charges $179.99 for a four-door sedan and $149.99 for a two-door coupe. Sara reports that $3,209.81 in total receipts had been collected. In that week, how many (a) four-door sedans and (b) two-door coupes had been serviced? • Formula: Total Pay = Rate per item x number of items • ** When you have a total number, subtract to find the other one*** • Let s = Number of four-door sedans serviced • Let (19-s) = Number of two-door sedans serviced

  9. $179.99s (four doors) + $149.99 (19 – s) two doors = $3,209.81 • Apply the distributive property: • $179.99s + $2,849.81 - $149.99s = $3,209.81 • Combine like terms: • ($179.99s - $149.99s) + $2,849.81 = $3,209.81 • $30.00s + $2,849.81 = $3,209.81 - 2,849.81 -2,849.81 30.00S = 360 30.00S = 360 30.00 30.00 S = 12

  10. Are we done yet? • S= 12 • How many 4 door sedans = 12 • How many 2 door sedans = 7 • Total 19

  11. Concept Check • Complete Problems 3 on page 107 • Let m = machine fed, 80 – m = handheld • #3 (.08 x m) + [(.20 x (80-m)]= 13.00 • .08m + (16 - .20m) = 13.00 • -.12m = -3.00 • m = 25 (machine fed) • 80 –m = 55 (handheld)

  12. Closure • Study Tip: • If you are solving for two items and you know the total, just make one a variable and then subtract the variable from the total to identify the second number. • 100 Cars ( two shades) • S = one color, 100 – S = the other color

  13. Homework • Complete problems 15, 18, 19, 20, on page 108 • 15) 197.55 • 18) 241.11 • 19) 2313.25 • 20) 5 watch bands

  14. Solutions Number 19 • 35 Oil Changes @ 33.95 + tune ups • 5 x 72.50 + • 7 x 82.50 + • 2 x 92.50 • = 2313.25

  15. Solution Problem 20 • 24.60 x B > 122.50 • Divide both sides by 24.60 • B = 4.9 would need to do 5 bands
