  1. NETWORKING Networking = a group of people who exchanges information, contacts, and experience for professional or social purposes

  2. CONNECTING!

  3. Prior to arrival identify your purpose. Define your objectives to know why you are there. • Name tags should be worn on your right side. This provides an easy sight line to your name when shaking hands. • Have an effective handshake. No “bone-crushers” or “Limp Fish” handshakes. Practice so that you became comfortable both giving and receiving. • Don’t forget to introduce yourself! Say your name clearly. “hello, may name is ________. It’s a pleasure to meet you” • Shake hands. • In TEN seconds or less, describe who you are and what you do. “ I am a leasing consultant for ABC company. We manage approximately 40 residential properties.” • When appropriate, offer a business card and ask the other person for one of theirs. Remember to keep your business cards handy. You should seem prepared and organized. • Don’t stay in one place for too long. After 9-10 minutes, excuse yourself with a pleasant, “it was nice meeting you…” Mingle. ‘work the room” to get the most from your efforts.

  4. Staying connected

  5. ONE • After meeting someone, write a few pertinent notes about them in the back of their business card or on your resource list. This is best if done before leaving the parking lot.

  6. TWO Within three days of initial meeting, contact them. Either by phone or a simple note. Email is not preferred. It’s too impersonal, don’t forget you want to be remembered. Keep it simple.

  7. THREE Win/Win wins. Keep your recent acquaintances in mind when someone could use their services. Contact them and ask permission to pass along their name and telephone number. Let them know who will be contacting them and why. They are sure to appreciate your interest in helping them to became successful and will be more likely to think of you when someone could use your services creating a Win/Win situation.

  8. FOUR • Volunteer for committees of industry associations. You will meet more members and will tend to stay connected

  9. FIVE Share industry meeting and seminars with your new contacts.
