Examples in Literature • Basic syntax: • “Yakov’s bitterness began to show.” (Exodus: page 216) • Irregular syntax: • “It even happened that various pieces of family jewelry, which in the old days his mother and sister had been overjoyed to wear at parties and celebrations, were sold…”(Metamorphosis: page 40) • Irregular syntax: • “Into a room in which Gregor ruled the bare walls all alone, no human being beside Grete was ever likely to set foot.”(Metamorphosis: page 32)
Analysis • Syntax is not a literary term that is chosen to be used- which sort of syntax is the choice of the writer. Because syntax is the arrangement of words in a sentence, key aspects of the sentence are emphasized depending on the specific organization of the words. • The first quote is a basic example of syntax- nothing too confusing or out of the ordinary, not much is illuminated. The author does this when they have a plain fact to be said and that is the most efficient way to state it. • In the second reference from the text, Kafka says “It even happened…”, with the word even he is emphasizing that something would not have expected to have to, did happen. It elicits sympathy from the reader. • In the third quote, the reader is set with a preposition “Into a room”. The style in which Kafka writes this sentence puts on emphasis upon the lonely room in which Gregor spends all his time. That room is his only space where he is welcome- it where he can live and then, where he dies.
