LGBT Tobacco Disparity • The population of Wisconsin is 5,726,398 • There are 286,320 people ( or 5% of the Wisconsin population*) who are LGBT • About 7.25% of all smokers in Wisconsin – 86,769 people – Are LGBT • This means that 5% of the population of Wisconsin contributes 7.25% of all the smokers in the state. * 5% represents a very conservative estimate of the LGBT population

  7. Why do LGBT People smoke more than the general population? • Minority Stress • Tobacco Industry targeting • Bars, clubs, and festivals as social gathering spaces

  8. Minority Stress • Explains affects of discrimination on an individual’s self esteem. • Challenges adoption consistent preventive health behaviors. • LGBT People of Color, Lesbian & Bisexual members experience multiple minority stressors • Complications of intersection of identities

What we need to address the disparity • Increase partnerships between tobacco prevention providers and the LGBT community • Use Stages of Change to assess cultural competencies • More education • Increased visibility of LGBT tobacco disparity • More resources for culturally competent programming for the LGBT Community
