  1. Information on the Research Group „Dependable Systems“ („Verlässliche Systeme“) Nikolas Nehmer on behalf of Andreas Reuter Kaiserslautern, January 22, 2008

Background • The research group was created in 2006 based on an endowed professorship by Klaus Tschira Foundation (KTS), Heidelberg. • At the moment, the group consists of 5 scholarship holders, 1 administrative assistant, plus AR. It will be expanded to ca. 10 scholarship holders during the next year. • The head of the group has a part-time assignment to the university; usually on Wednesday and Friday. During the rest of the week he is heading two companies in Heidelberg, the European Media Laboratory and the EML Research.

Research Areas • Dependability is a very complex subject. • One popular definition reads: „[D. is] the trustworthiness of a computing system that allows reliance to be justifiably placed on the services it delivers.” • But note: “Reliance” is contextually subjective and depends on a particular stakeholder’s needs in different circumstances. The focus can be on different properties of services such as availability, performance, real-time response, ability to avoid catastrophic failures, capability of resisting adverse conditions and prevention of deliberate intrusions. Dependability can thus be considered an umbrella for other system attributes such as reliability, availability, safety, survivability, maintainability, and security.

  4. Research Areas • Since the group can‘t possibly cover all the aspects related to dependability, we will focus on the following topics: • Dependability at different levels of granularity (threads, components, workflows) • Compositional principles supporting dependability • Measures of dependability • A conceptual framework for dealing with exceptions • Certification of complex systems

  5. Operational Principles • Most of the research activities will be carried out locally, often in cooperation with other groups (including IESE, MPI etc.). • Some projects will be run in collaboration with one of the labs in Heidelberg.

  6. Offers by the Research Group • (Mostly) specialized graduate-level teaching offerings (lectures, seminars, practical courses). • Theses in the group‘s research areas (mostly in collaboration with other groups). • Possibility of Ph.D. scholarships • Internships and (maybe) jobs in one of the Heidelberg labs.
