  1. Think of 4 questions this picture makes you want to ask.

  2. Type of organisations in Tourism Private, Public & Voluntary

  3. Organisations • For each organisation listed try to identify what the purpose of the organisation is, where their money comes from and who owns it: • McDonalds • OXFAM • The Police • Coca-cola • Cambridge City Council • Citizens Advice Bureau

  4. Differences • There are clearly differences between the types of organisations on the list. • Can you put the organisations into 3 groups?

  5. Public • A public organisation is one that is funded by the government either locally (Cambridge County Council or EEDA) or nationally from central government (DCSM: Dept for Culture, Media and Sport). • Their aim is usually to provide a service to the public. They are not judged by their financial result, as they do not make a profit. They are judged on numbers accessing their service. • Can you identify any public organisations?

  6. Private • Most organisations in the tourism industry are privately owned in some way: (private limited company, sole trader, cooperative, public limited, franchise). • Although there are key differences within this category they are aim to make a profit. • All theme parks, restaurants, tour operators and travel agents in the UK are privately owned. • Can you identify any private organisations?

  7. Voluntary • Voluntary groups are usually charities or causes that have an aim which does not include making a profit. Any money they make will be reinvested in the aims of the group. • They will rely on some people giving up their time- volunteering their services to help with their cause, but they probably will also have a small number of employees. • Can you identify any voluntary organisations?

  8. Organisations in the travel and tourism industry. Try to complete the chart with 2 examples from each of the three types of organisation

  9. Ideas • Alton Towers • Civil Aviation Authority • Madam Tussauds • Stagecoach • VisitEngland • Crown Plaza Hotel • National Trust • STA travel • First choice • City sightseeing • English Heritage • Tate Modern
