WIC Risk Criteria Changes 2011-2012 • 7 Revised Risks and 1 New Risk based on: • Risk Identification and Selection Collaborative (RISC) 5 year review cycle • 2 risks revised • CDC 2010 Growth Chart recommendations • NCHS 2010 Terminology for Childhood Overweight and Obesity • Anthropometric definitions or titles are impacted

WIC Risk Changes-Revised • 103 Underweight or At Risk of Underweight (Infants and Children) • Previous terminology: At Risk of Becoming Underweight • Michigan-Underweight will continue as a separate High Risk • 113 Obese (Children 2-5 years) • Continues as >95th percentile BMI for age • Client-centered sensitivity re: “obese” • Use term for assessment documentation only

Lab Manual Changes (cont’d):Retention schedules • Changed Retention Schedule of QC and Daily Client Logs to be Consistent with Other WIC Retention Schedules • 3 years, 150 days Following end of Fiscal Year • Lab logs must be retained in the lab area for 2 months • Copy of Manufacturer’s Package Insert for each lot number of liquid control solutions are retained with the corresponding QC Log

  28. Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting • NEW!!! Centralized phone reporting • Begins March 5, 2012 • All reporting of suspected child abuse and neglect • Follow within 72 hours with a DHS-3200 Report of Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect

  30. MI-WIC Policy 6.02 states: • “During the initial certification visit and thereafter as appropriate, each client, parent or caretaker shall be advised of the types of health and community services available, where they are located, how they may be obtained, and why they may be useful.”

  31. Federal Regulations, CFR 246.7(b) states: • “Program Referral and Access. State and local agencies shall provide WIC Program applicants and participants or their designated proxies with information on other health-related and public assistance programs, and when appropriate, shall refer applicants and participants to such programs.”

  32. How are we doing as a State? • Management Evaluation Indicators tell the story: • 5.1a Medicaid Referrals – 50% Met • 5.1b Health and Resource Referrals – 45.5% Met • 5.1c Substance Abuse Referral Info – 63.6% Met
