  3. How the New Zealand Curriculum relates to the classroom MODULE 7: Understanding the New Zealand Curriculum The New Zealand Curriculum guides schools’ own curriculums Teachers use it to shape their classroom curriculums School/classroom curriculums reflect their students and their communities.

  4. New Zealand Curriculum – overview The New Zealand Curriculum sets the direction for teaching and learning in English-medium schools. MODULE 7: Understanding the New Zealand Curriculum The curriculum includes: a vision values principles key competencies learning areas.

  5. NZC – vision • The vision of the curriculum is all students are “confident, connected, actively involved, lifelong learners”. MODULE 7: Understanding the New Zealand Curriculum

  6. NZC – principles • What is important and desirable in a school’s curriculum • The educational experience students are entitled to. Inclusion is one of the principles in the New Zealand Curriculum. MODULE 7: Understanding the New Zealand Curriculum

  8. NZC – key competencies • The key competencies enable students to live, learn, work and contribute to their communities. • The five key competencies: • Thinking • Using language, symbols and texts • Managing self • Relating to others • Participating and contributing MODULE 7: Understanding the New Zealand Curriculum

NZC – learning areas Access to learning in each learning area is important for all students MODULE 7: Understanding the New Zealand Curriculum The eight learning areas are: arts English health and physical education (PE) learning languages mathematics and statistics science social sciences technology.

Making the curriculum accessible MODULE 7: Understanding the New Zealand Curriculum • To make curriculum accessible changes can be made to: • content • teaching and learning materials • the responses expected from students • Adaptations = changes to environments, materials and strategies • Differentiations = changes to content and expected responses to the curriculum.

  12. Curriculum – who does what? • Teachers – plan, develop, review the curriculum and make changes • Teachers’ aides – help implement the classroom programme. MODULE 7: Understanding the New Zealand Curriculum
