  1. RACE

  2. What is race?

  3. Definition • Just to refresh your memory, here is our definition of the term race: • The term refers to the categorization of humans into populations or ancestral groups on the basis of various sets of heritable characteristics. • The physical features that are commonly seen as indications of race are salient visual traits such as skin color, facial features and hair texture.

  4. Today’s lesson • In today’s lesson, we will be exploring the topic of race. • We will look be looking at different ways that the media misrepresents different races.

  5. History • Misrepresentation of different races by the media is not something new. • There was a time when most movies, and television shows only had white actors.

  6. History • However, in the 50’s and 60’s there was a change; a step in the right direction. • During this time, the civil rights movement was taking place and civil rights leaders such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Park challenged the separation of blacks and whites. • At this time, blacks and other minority groups were mainly used as comic relief in television shows • If they were not playing in those roles, they would not have had any acting opportunity.

  7. History • Example of a minority being used as comic relief during this time is the character Buckwheat on "The Little Rascals."   • "The Little Rascals" was a television show which aired from 1922-1944.

  8. The Little Rascals

  9. Racial Stereotypes • Although, many civil rights leaders played large roles in altering our society’s views on race, minorities are still being misrepresented. • One way that the media misrepresents different races today is through the use of racial stereotypes.

  10. Racial Stereotypes • A racial stereotype is a generalized representation of a racial group, composed of what are thought to be typical characteristics of members of that race.

  11. Racial Stereotypes • What do you think of when you see the following images?

  12. =

  13. The Media • The media has constructed these images in our minds. • The media portrays many inaccurate stereotypes about numerous races. • The media often shows less favorable image of minorities than they do of other races.

  14. Example • Here is a video clip that demonstrates how even young kids are influenced by the media

  15. Racial Stereotypes • African Americans, Hispanics, and Aboriginals, in particular, are often shown as being less more vulgar, more violent and less intelligent than Caucasians. • Statistics, however, show otherwise. • Most violence amongBlacks,Hispanics, and Aboriginals occur in inner cities, which is a very slim percentage of the total population. • Still the media often will makes it seem as though most of these races are in fact violent.

  16. Racial Stereotypes • By the media’s negative portrayal of certain races, students may also become biased, and view their classmates in a different way.

  17. News Coverage • Another way is the amounts of news coverage different stories receive.

  18. News Coverage • There is a lack of news coverage on racial minorities in our society • It seems that producers often assume that no one cares about minority races and won’t follow their cases in the media.

  19. Examples • Most of the new coverage goes to Caucasians; when black, Aboriginal, or Hispanic children go missing, how often do we hear about them? • Non-White youth are underrepresented in media coverage in comparison to actual missing children statistics.

  20. Examples • How many of you have heard of Jon Benet Ramsey?

  21. Examples • Jon Benet Ramsey has gotten a great deal of media attention. How about……. Jada Justice?

  22. Conclusion • The media has a huge influence on our society • The media misrepresents different races in many ways.   • Racial Stereotypes • The media often shows less favorable image of minorities than they do of other races. • News Coverage • The fact that there is a limited amount of news coverage on minority races it encourages our society to disregard minority races. • In addition, it shows that they are not included in our society

  23. Critical Media Literacy • The examples in the power point regarding the negative depictions of various racial groups is enough to influence your minds, as well as any child and young adult. • The goal of the presentation was to get you guys to start looking at the media from a critical perspective.

  24. Continued • You need to be critical of all information that is presented to you, whether it comes from media outlets, or any other source. • With the past two presentations I hope you have learned to not take everything you encounter at face value.
