Hannukah The Festival of Lights
What is Hannukah? Hannukah is an annual holiday celebrated by Jewish people. It commemorates the recapturing of the holy temple in Jerusalem from the ruling Syrians, as well as the relighting of the holy temple’s lamp, known as the menorah.
How Do People Celebrate? By lighting special candles each day • By attending family or community parties • By playing special games and eating holiday foods
The Menorah Hannukah candles are brightly coloured like birthday candles, and burn for about half an hour. They are placed in a special holder called a menorah, which represents the menorah found in the holy temple in Jerusalem.
The Dreidel While the menorah burns, children play a betting game with a toy top called a dreidel. They bet chocolate gold coins that they received on first night of Hannukah called gelt. Click on the dreidels to play a game!
Holiday Food: Latkes Latkes or “potato pancakes” are a special food that is served during Hannukah. Latkes are often served with applesauce or sour cream at Canadian Hannukah parties.
