  1. GIS SHOWCASE: Examples and Resources for Mapping June 26, 2009 Madhu Lakshmanan, LSNTAP

  2. Welcome! If you joined the conference via telephone, please enter your audio pin if you haven’t already. (The image on the right is an example - your audio pin will be different.) If you joined with a microphone and headset or speakers (VoIP), please be sure your device volume settings are properly adjusted. If your mic & headset is not working, please try unplugging and re-plugging in your device. We will begin promptly at the top of the hour.

  3. Please, let us know your questions and comments during the training Maximize/minimize your screen with the chevron symbol Telephone participants need to enter their audio pin Ask a question in the questions log Raise your hand

  4. Ensuring we can hear you Un-muted Muted Mic & Speakers users should make sure the microphone volume is turned up. You can always switch to telephone at anytime in the training. Ensure that you have not muted yourself

  5. Questions? Raise your hand, please!

  6. Today’s training… …is being recorded …will be archived on our website Registered attendees will receive an email with a link to this information once it has been posted

  7. Presenters Madhu Lakshmanan LSNTAP Mona TawataoLegal Services of Northern California (LSNC) Keith MorrisElderlaw of Michigan

  8. Today’s Presentation Brief introduction Examples from LSNC The Elderlaw of Michigan Experience Getting started with mapping today! Some possibilities Resources

  9. Mapping & GIS • A geographic information system (GIS) captures, stores, analyzes, manages, and presents data that refers to location. • Mapping is the commonest way of visualizing GIS data. • GIS infrastructure, hardware & software are one of the most complex, expensive and dynamic systems now. Decent basic customized systems would run into the 6 figures.

  10. Mapping @LSNC • Early adopters and one of the most sophisticated users of GIS in our community.

  11. Using Maps as an Advocacy Tool NTAP Webinar June 26, 2009 Legal Services of Northern CA www.lsnc.net

  12. Why use maps and visual data? • A picture is worth a thousand words • Myth of objectivity • Makes concepts and certain phenomena visible, e.g. structural racism

  13. Legislative advocacy: Fighting health care cuts

  14. Administrative advocacy: Seeking environmental justice

  15. Community education: Challenging unequal municipal services

  16. Applying the data and map presentation tool Maps are an advocacy tool Use data of opponents and detractors to make your case Maps/compelling data presentations to foster collaboration, problem-solving Maps/data in litigation and other adversarial proceedings

  17. Mapping/Data Resources • LSNC website - GIS mapping page • REP website – Mapping Race page • Neighborhood Knowledge California 2.0 • NKCA tutorials on LSNC website • Dataplace • American Factfinder

  18. Mapping/Data Resources (cont’d) • Cedar Grove Institute for Sustainable Communities • PolicyLink – Community Mapping Toolkit • CensusScope • ESRI • Metropolitan Area Research Corporation

  19. Mapping @ Elder Law of Michigan • Trying to use mapping for targeting services and evaluation.

  20. Example

  21. Data created using Map

  22. Getting started with mapping today

  23. Google Earth – Quick look

  24. The process • What do I want to do? • Map my sample New Mexico case data and also analyze it vis-à-vis the population of senior citizens in that state. • What do I need? • A mapping application (Google Earth) • KML/KMZ files from the census for NM seniors & for my case data • Geocoding service (to add lat/long to case data) • KML creating application from census data • Optional graphing tool

  25. Online Tool to create KML files from Census data http://ctasgis02.psur.utk.edu/tokml/Default.aspx

  26. Google Earth- Census data

  27. Using case data • A concern for mapping case data directly always remains that of confidentiality. • Geocoding your case data would require you to get coordinates (lat/long) for the address portion of your data and you don’t need to send any other information to the geocoder. • It is exactly what you do when you type addresses into MapQuest or into your car’s GPS system to get you somewhere. • Aggregating case data by zipcode would be almost as useful in showing you density on a map while preserving confidentiality of a specific case address.

  28. Add lat/lon information to your case data @ www.batchgeocode.com You can download a KML file with this data.

  29. Census data overlaid with case data directly in Google Earth

  30. Raw case data to aggregate data

  31. EarthPlot – aggregate data on a map

  32. Case data by zipcode aggregate The size of the blue circles is proportional to the number of cases in that zip code area.

  33. Individual & aggregate representation of case data

  34. Google Earth representation of a legal aid service area

  35. Source for Base Maps - shape files http://www2.census.gov/cgi-bin/shapefiles/national-files

  36. Other Tools and Resources for maps, data, conversion etc • SHP2KML & KML2SHP • AFFMapper • GCensus (to KML some Census data) http://gecensus.stanford.edu/gcensus/ajax/gcensus.php • CensusScope http://www.censusscope.org/ • American Fact Finder • Rural Assistance Center http://www.raconline.org/maps/ • MappingWorlds – very cool application to use on your website if relevant. http://show.mappingworlds.com/usa/ • MapCruzin – links to many sources of geographic data • MapAList – geocode and make KML of spreadsheet data

  37. GCensus Generated KML Households – Asian Alone Householder – Total for Washtenaw County, by Census Tract (2000 Census) http://gecensus.stanford.edu/gcensus/ajax/gcensus.php

  38. Upcoming… • Hands-on multi-part trainings using the process outlined here. • Increased content in the lsntap.org tech library • The GIS list revived! • Support @ the helpdesk for mapping
