  1. Relationships with People “What are the traditional sources of political and social discord in the development of Canada?”

  2. Objectives • Be able to describe the traditional sources of discord within Canada. • Craft a thesis statement using provided guidelines. Relationships • Europeans/Non Europeans • French/English • Canada/US • Canada/UK • Us/Them

  3. Europeans and Non Europeans Historically • First Nations + Explorers/Settlers • Western Europeans + Eastern Europeans • Europeans + Asians Today • Who is Canadian? • British Parliamentary style of government.

  4. French and English Historically • Napoleonic Wars • Seven Years War + Battle of the Plains of Abraham • The Acadian Expulsion • Lord Durham’s Report • 1982 Constitution Today • Language • Politics • Quebec + Rest of Canada (ROC)

  5. Canada and the USA Historically • War of 1812 (we burned down the white house!) • Reciprocity • Annexation + Manifest Destiny Today • #1 trade partner • Geographic ties • Cultural ties • “Living next to you is in some ways like sleeping with an elephant. No matter how friendly and even-tempered is the beast, if I can call it that, one is affected by every twitch and grunt.” P. Trudeau.

  6. Canada and the UK Historically • Colonies and Territories • British North America Act of 1867 • Last colony: NL 1949 • Independence growing following WWI and WWII • Canada Constitution Act 1982 Today • Crown is the essence of the criminal law system. • Royal Assent for laws.

  7. Patterns? • What patterns are you seeing in these examples of “ebb and flow” relationships? • Have relationships between these pairings mostly stayed the same or mostly changed over the past 200 years? • Are 19th Century values impacting the pairings in any way? • Are the sources of discord unique to Canada, or would you expect to see a similar experience in a similar country or culture in the 19th or 21st Centuries?

  8. Us and Them. “At the start of the origin of awareness of the self lies the presence of you, and perhaps even the presence of a more general we. Only in dialogue, in argument, in opposition, and also in aspiring towards a new community is awareness of my self created…separate from another. I know that I am, because I know another is.” – Tischner in Kapuscinski • Reflect: • How have you Other-ed? • How have you been Other-ed?

  9. Thesis Statement Craft a thesis statement using one of the three components in response to one of the questions below. How do values impact interactions between individuals and groups? Are the sources of discord unique to Canada, or would you expect to see a similar experience in a similar country or culture in the 19th or 21st Centuries? How do historical relationships impact contemporary relationships in Canada? • Recall: • An effective thesis: • Tells us something we don’t already know. • Contradicts an existing belief. • Offers a solution to an existing problem/issue.
